Marcos A. Kerbel

Marcos Kerbel has been a distinguished international banker, CPA, CFP, university professor, consultant, and community leader.
Marcos was born in Cuba and came to the United States alone in his early teens as part of Operation Pedro Pan and lived in foster homes in Los Angeles, CA. He reunited with his parents and brother a year later. The family resettled in Atlanta, Georgia, and then moved to Miami.
While living in Atlanta, Marcos finished high school at Henry Grady High School. He earned a BBA in Accounting and an MBA in International Business from Georgia State University.
Mr. Kerbel began his banking career with Pan American Bank of Miami (now Bank of America). He rose from trainee to Senior Vice President and Deputy Manager of its International Division.
A decade later, Marcos joined Israel Discount Bank Limited to head its newly licensed International Banking Agency in Miami and Florida’s first license. He remained with the bank for over two decades as Senior Vice-President and Manager.
Mr. Kerbel was the founding treasurer and later past Chair of the Board of Directors and President of the Florida International Bankers Association (FIBA). He has also chaired many of the organization’s committees, including its 25th-anniversary celebration, for which he co-authored: Leading the Way-A Comprehensive History of International Banking in Florida and a complementary video. A second edition appeared to commemorate FIBA’s 35th anniversary in 2015; more recently, Marcos was the 40th-anniversary celebration committee’s Chair.
Mr. Kerbel has chaired FIBA’s Education and Training Committee for over a decade and was named Dean of the FIBA Academy. The Academy oversees the AMLCA and CPAML Anti-Money Laundering Certifications in partnership with Florida International University.
Florida Governor Robert Martinez appointed Mr. Kerbel to the International Banking and Trade Study Commission, responsible for drafting several bills that became law. Among them were: The Anti-Money Laundering of Florida, Choice of Law, Choice of Forum, the revision of Chapter 663-International Banking of the Florida Statutes, and the creation of The Florida Export Finance Corporation.
Mr. Kerbel is the Gold Medallion recipient from the City of Miami Beach for exceptional international leadership. As confirmed by the Miami-Dade County Board of Commissioners, Marcos is a current member of its Antonio Jorge Social and Economic Development Council (SEDC). He is also on the Board of Directors of the Cuban Banking Study Group. Furthermore, Mr. Kerbel recently became a member of the Scholarly Advisory Council of CasaCuba at Florida International University (FIU) and the faculty advisor for the Financial Planning Association (FPA) FIU Student Chapter. Previously he participated in the MOV’N Committee of the County and the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, dealing with traffic and transportation issues.
Mr. Kerbel has been a distinguished educator for over 30 years and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami.
He was awarded the “Excellence in Teaching Award in 2003, 2007, and 2015. From the spring of 2008 to 2012, the Financial Management Association and the Finance Honor Society have recognized Marcos Kerbel as the “Most Challenging and Educative Professor,” “The Professor of the Semester,” and “Best Professor” at Florida International University. Professor Kerbel has also been an Adjunct Faculty Member at Barry University and Miami-Dade College and its Center for Financial Training. He also teaches at UNIBE in the Dominican Republic and the Center of Monetary and Banking Studies (CEMB) at the University Thomas More in Managua, Nicaragua.
Professor Kerbel has also taught and participated as a speaker and panelist in hemispheric banking and finance conferences in Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Spain, and Surinam. The media also interviews him on economic, banking finance, and community-related topics locally and in several countries. In November 2015, his accomplishments appeared in the book; It Happened in Miami, authored by Dartmouth College Professors Myrna Katz Frommer, Ph.D., and Harvey Frommer, Ph.D.,
