Logistics and Supply Chain

From Trinidad to FIU: How a Bold Move Shaped a Logistics Career

By John Kowal

When Nadeem Khan Mohammed left Trinidad and Tobago to pursue a graduate degree in the United States, he wanted a new perspective as he searched for a professional direction with exposure to an industry that operates on a global scale. In his search, he was able to find exactly what he was looking for in Miami, deciding to earn a Master of Science in Logistics and Supply Chain Management at Florida International University (FIU), a top international education destination for students across the globe.

As an international student himself, Nadeem’s experience reflects a path many students aspire to: Discovering a passion for a new career path through hands-on learning and logistics education, building meaningful professional connections in the logistics and supply chain management sector, and translating academic experiences into a career opportunity in international logistics. His journey shows the real benefits of studying at a top school like FIU. It offers a complete business education for international students that prepares them for successful careers across many industries.

Choosing FIU and Studying Logistics in a Global City

Miami played an important role in Nadeem’s decision to earn a master’s in logistics. The city’s trade industry serves as a living lab where goods move seamlessly between the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America and beyond—a key hub for global supply chains, full of diversity, energy, and industry connections that aligned with Nadeem’s career goals.

“I experienced living in Trinidad my entire life, and I wanted to try something different,” he said. “Miami gave me that opportunity.”

When he first arrived on FIU's main campus, the size and diversity of FIU stood out immediately. In the classroom, that diversity shaped global logistics discussions in ways he had not experienced before. Students brought different cultural, economic, and professional perspectives that challenged assumptions and broadened their approaches to problems.

“In one class, we had about 18 different perspectives. You realize pretty quickly that there isn’t just one way to look at an issue,” he says. “Everyone’s background influences how they think, and that’s especially important in business.”

A Visit That Cemented His Interest in Logistics & Supply Chain

One of the most influential moments of Nadeem’s graduate experience came through FIU’s emphasis on experiential learning.

As part of the Logistics and Supply Chain Management Association, he participated in a site visit to Port Everglades. The visit offered an inside look at Miami's port operations, the large cargo volumes that are handled daily, and the coordination required to move goods efficiently across borders.

Seeing logistics in action helped connect classroom concepts to real-world operations. Meeting industry professionals and learning about their roles made the field feel tangible and accessible.

“It cemented why I wanted to spend the rest of my career in this industry,” Nadeem shared. “I could see myself there long term.”

From Career Fair to Employment

Nadeem’s transition from student to professional was shaped by one key interaction.

While attending an FIU career fair, he met representatives from Tropical Shipping. What started as a short conversation turned into more discussions, which eventually led to his first job as a management trainee.

For him, the experience highlighted the importance of networking and being willing to engage directly with employers.

“That opportunity came from showing up and having a conversation,” he says. “FIU created the space for that connection to happen.”

Reflecting on the Journey

Now working in the logistics field as a global operations supervisor for Tropical Shipping, Nadeem looks back on his time at FIU as a period of opportunity, growth and clarity. Studying in Miami, learning alongside international peers, and gaining firsthand industry exposure helped him find his foothold in the Miami logistics space with confidence.

When asked what advice he would give other international students considering graduate study in the United States, his answer is straightforward.

“Just do it,” he says. “You learn as you go. My only regret is not doing it sooner.”
