The International Business (IB) Ph.D. Concentration, offered by the Department of International Business, aims to develop doctoral graduates who are well prepared to undertake an academic career in the following three fields at reputable research universities:
- International Business
- Strategic Management
- Entrepreneurship
Graduates of our program have secured tenure-track academic jobs at reputable universities such as George Washington University, Georgia State University, Florida Atlantic University, Saint Louis University, San Diego State University, University of Toledo, University of Massachusetts at Lowell, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Hofstra University, Suffolk University, University of Southern Indiana, and James Madison University, and been nominated for outstanding dissertation awards by major professional organizations. They also have co-authored publications in academic journals such as Strategic Management Journal and Journal of International Business Studies.
Coursework
In addition to the following IB seminar courses, students will take methods and elective courses, required concentration seminar courses, and complete several research projects during the program:
- MAN 7207 Theories of Organization
- MAN 7609 Cross-cultural and International Management
- MAN 7616 Global Strategy
- MAN 7640 International Business Theory
- MAN 7718 Analysis of Corporate Policy
- MAN 7910 Advanced Management Research
Critical assessment and project related milestones are as follows:
- Year 1 (early Summer): Methods exam (if deemed necessary).
- Year 1 (Summer): First year research project of sufficient quality for submission to a conference. Written paper and presentation at a department brown-bag in Year 2 early Fall.
- Year 2 (early Summer): Comprehensive examination, which includes a written component and an oral component, taken after successfully completing all course requirements.
- Year 3 (by beginning of Fall): Research paper of sufficient quality for submission to a reputable journal.
- Year 3 (by end of Spring): Completion of dissertation proposal defense
- Year 4 (by end of Spring): Completion of dissertation defense

Our faculty are highly visible scholars who publish in influential academic journals such as Academy of Management Review, Journal of International Business Studies, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of Management,Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Business Ethics, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, and Journal of World Business. They serve as editors or on the editorial review boards of top-tier journals in their fields and also occupy leadership positions in major professional organizations such as the Academy of Management, Academy of International Business, and Strategic Management Society.

Admission

International applicants may need to fulfill additional requirements (e.g., TOEFL). Please refer to Frequently Asked Questions for answers to typical questions pertaining to the Ph.D. in Business Administration program.
While all applicants are expected to satisfy admission requirements of the program, students admitted to the IB Ph.D. Concentration typically have a graduate degree (MBA, MS or MA) with at least 3.5 GPA, GMAT scores of at least 650 (or its GRE equivalent) and, on graduation, interested in pursuing an academic career in a research university.
Typically, all admitted students will receive tuition fee waiver and graduate assistantships for four years. The department may nominate eligible and exceptional applicants for University Graduate School Fellowships. Please see Financial Aid and Fellowships for financial assistance available to admitted students.
In addition, admitted students who are US citizens or permanent residents may apply for FLAS Fellowships offered by FIU’s Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center. Note that these fellowships include a language course requirement.
To maximize their chances of being considered for financial assistance and fellowships, applicants are advised to complete all admission-related paperwork as soon as possible, instead of waiting till the application deadline.
