The Rise of Interdisciplinary Roles: STEM and Business in the Job Market

By Janelle Bombalier

Understanding the Hybrid Job Market

In the rapidly evolving landscape of the global job market, a significant shift is underway. The demand for professionals who are not just proficient in their field, but also possess a blend of technical and business skills, is rising. This trend is particularly emphasized in the realms of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), where interdisciplinary roles are becoming more and more in demand.

What is an Interdisciplinary Job Role?

Definition: Interdisciplinary positions involve integrating knowledge, methods, and expertise from multiple disciplines or fields of study to address complex problems, create innovative solutions, or develop new approaches to work.

The intertwine of STEM and Business

STEM fields are diverse, ranging from cybersecurity and information technology to health informatics and business analytics. As technology becomes increasingly integral across all sectors, the demand for professionals with a combination of specialized technical knowledge and strategic business acumen continues to grow.

An example of a role requiring business, soft, and technical skills is a Business Analyst position. On one hand, they need a solid grasp of the business side of things. They're figuring out how this system fits into the company's bigger picture, and what it needs to do. It's a bit like piecing together a puzzle, making sure every part aligns with the company's goals.

Then there's the people aspect. They're constantly in discussions, ensuring everyone from the tech team to the end-users is on the same page. It's all about clear communication and understanding different perspectives.

Finally, they need to know enough about the technicalities to ensure what they're planning is feasible. In this interdisciplinary role a Business Analyst must balance business insight, people skills, and tech knowledge.

What About Salaries?

Occupations that blend business and STEM skills are expected to experience significant growth. The graphic below illustrates the median salary and the rising demand for several of these interdisciplinary roles.

Advice and Insights

STEM careers often offer better growth opportunities and job stability. To be competitive, we advise that you focus on developing both technical skills and soft skills like communication, problem-solving, and strategic thinking. The STEM field is constantly evolving, so continuous learning and adaptation are key to success. Consider looking into educational programs or certifications that provide a blend of technical and business education.

The Role of Educational Institutions

In the current job market, the concept of "Skills Premium" is increasingly relevant, particularly in interdisciplinary roles.

A study conducted by the Pew Research Center reveals that approximately 33% of STEM workers have pursued some form of postgraduate education. The data underscores the importance of investing in education, particularly in areas that align with the evolving demands of the job market.
