Haar chosen for national competitiveness council.

(May 11, 2022) Jerry Haar, professor of international business, has been named a senior fellow at the Council on Competitiveness, an organization that brings together members from academia, business, labor, and the national labs to champion a nonpartisan action agenda that fuels entrepreneurship and spurs the commercialization of new ideas. In this role, he will provide strategic advice to help guide the Council’s policies and strengthen its membership. Haar was chosen for his expertise on matters relating to U.S. competitiveness and is expected to play a key role in several upcoming council initiatives. MORE
Two FIU Business professors have been awarded Fulbright awards for the academic year 2022-23 by the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

(April 18, 2022) Erica Harris, associate professor of accounting, will be conducting research at Dublin City University in Dublin, Ireland for two months during this summer of 2022. Her project is related to Irish nonprofit organizations. MORE

(April 18, 2022) Minye (Michael) Tang, assistant professor of accounting and faculty fellow in Program Administration and Evaluation, is visiting ISCTE Business School at ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon in Portugal for three months during the summer of 2023. He will be working with the finance and accounting faculty and doctoral students on issues related to ESG (environmental, societal, and governance). MORE
Prestigious international appointments for Associate Dean Kundu

Sumit K. Kundu, a professor of international business and James K. Batten Eminent Scholar Chair of International Business, has been elected vice president and president-elect for the Indian Academy of Management, an affiliate of the Academy of Management, the premier management research and education body of management researchers and educators in the world.
Kundu, who also serves as associate dean, international programs for FIU Business, was also nominated to become a fellow of the BAM Peer Review College. This is an honor bestowed upon a select few scholars by the British Academy of Management. MORE
Visiting professor honors for capital markets lab director Carrillo

Flavio Carrillo, an associate teaching professor of finance and director of the FIU Business Capital Markets Lab, has been appointed by the University of Florida as a visiting scholar, a one-year appointment effective spring 2022. (December 8, 2021) William Newburry, chair of the Department of International Business, has been named the editor of AIB Insights, the journal of the Academy of International Business. Newburry, Ryder Eminent Scholar of Global Business, is also an AIB fellow, non-resident senior research fellow at the Nanyang Business School Center for Emerging Markets, and president of the Consortium of Undergraduate International Business Education (CUIBE). Department of Marketing Chair named 2021 FIU Top Scholar

(June 9, 2021) Anthony Miyazaki, chair and professor, Department of Marketing and Logistics, was recognized as a 2021 Top Scholar by the FIU Office of the Provost, one of 30 faculty members across the university to receive the award. He was recognized for achievements in the category of Globally Engaged and/or Culturally Sensitive Teaching. Miyazaki, who led the establishment of the Master of Marketing, is an expert in cause-related marketing, among other topics. His research on topics such as pricing, online consumer privacy, and state-sponsored lotteries have been published in the Journal of Marketing, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Retailing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Product and Brand Management, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Consumer Affairs, Psychology & Marketing, and others. Tang receives “30 Under 40” honor from National Investor Relations Institute.

(June 9, 2021) Minye (Michael) Tang, assistant professor of accounting, has been named to the National Investor Relations Institute (NIRI) 2021 class of “30 Under 40,” which honors the most talented young individuals in the investor relations community. He is the sole full-time academic faculty member among the distinguished group of 30 professionals to be selected for the honor by the committee of NRI Fellows.
Founded in 1969, NIRI is the professional association of corporate officers and investor relations consultants responsible for communication among corporate management, shareholders, securities analysts and other financial community constituents, and is the largest professional investor relations association in the world. Haar selected for Fulbright screening panel.

(June 9, 2021) Jerry Haar, professor of international business, has been invited by the Institute of International Education (IIE) to serve on the National Screening Committee for research and study proposals in Business for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. The IIE annually administers the competition for the Fulbright program, sponsored by the United States Department of State in partnership with foreign governments and universities.
Haar, the author of 12 books, is a global fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., and a research affiliate of the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University. He has served as director of Washington Programs for the Council of the Americas, and served as special assistant to two cabinet secretaries. MORE
Lyles named Academy of Management Fellow

(May 10, 2021) Marjorie A. Lyles, International Business Distinguished Research Fellow at Florida International University’s College of Business (FIU Business), has be elected as an Academy of Management (AOM) Fellow, one of fourteen scholars worldwide to be selected for the prestigious honor in 2021. The designation of Fellow recognizes and honors members of the academy who have made significant contributions to the science and practice of management. It also provides opportunities for fellowship and a forum for discussion among honorees.
Lyles, one of the world’s most prominent scholars in international business and strategy, joined FIU Business as a research fellow in 2018. In a career spanning over 30 years of international business research, teaching and consulting experience, she was most recently the OneAmerica Chair in Business Administration and a professor of international strategic management at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business. (January 14, 2021) William Hardin, associate dean of the Chapman Graduate School, professor of finance and real estate, Knight Ridder Endowed Eminent Scholar and Tibor and Sheila Hollo Research Fellow, has been appointed as co-editor of the Journal of Real Estate Research. The flagship journal of the American Real Estate Society provides insight into issues in real estate for practitioners and academics. The journal focuses on investigating and expanding the frontiers of knowledge that cover business decision-making applications or scholarly real estate research. MORE
Global management and leadership professor serves on National Academies of Science panel

(January 14, 2021) Juan I. Sanchez, Knight Ridder Byron Harless Eminent Scholar Chair in Management and eminent scholar, Department of Global Leadership and Management, served on a National Academies of Science panel, “Committee for a Peer Review of a Report Commissioned by the Social Security Administration on Required Mental Health Requirements for Selected Occupations,” work done by the Social Security Administration and its contractors to determine the social interaction and adaptation requirements for a set of selected occupations. International business professor among top 2% in the field of business and management for citations

(December 9, 2020) Fred Walumbwa, a professor of international business is among the top 2% of researchers in their fields according to analysis of author citations published by the journal PLOS Biology. The publicly available database provides standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator. Researchers are classified into 22 fields and 176 sub-fields. MORE

Dean Li elected to Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors

(October 14, 2020) FIU Business Dean Joanne Li has been elected to the Greater Miami Chamber Commerce’s 114th Board of Directors. She will be installed during a board retreat that will be held virtually on November 16. Research by FIU Business faculty cited in World Bank’s latest Global Investment Competitiveness Report

(October 14, 2020) Research by Jerry Haar, a professor of international business and David Wernick, a teaching professor of international business, has been cited in the World Bank’s latest Global Investment Competitiveness Report, “Rebuilding Investor Confidence in Times of Uncertainty,” recently released. The report, developed in the month’s preceding the outbreak of COVID-19, focuses on trade and investment policy uncertainty due to policy shifts, globally and nationally. It finds that rising policy uncertainty is darkening the outlook for foreign direct investment. MORE
Dean Li Joins International Advisory Council for Leading Business School in Portugal

(September 18, 2020) FIU Business Dean Joanne Li has been named one of eight founding members of International Advisory Council for the ISEG - Lisbon School of Economics & Management in Lisbon, Portugal. ISEG is the first Portuguese school of economics and management and is part of the University of Lisbon (ULisboa), the largest and top-ranked Portuguese university. ISEG’s master’s in finance program is currently ranked No. 31 in the world by the Financial Times. MORE

(July 7, 2020) George Marakas, director of Doctoral Programs at FIU Business, has been elected to the board of the Executive DBA Council (EDBAC), the international standards and networking body for over 150 DBA programs worldwide. Seema Pissaris receives Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching

(July 6, 2020) Seema Pissaris, clinical professor of international business, has been honored with the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching by FIU’s Office of the Provost. She will receive the award at the Faculty Convocation Award Ceremony in fall 2020.
Pissaris teaches graduate level courses in entrepreneurship, leadership and social entrepreneurship. She leads an internship project which provides students the practical skills needed to set up their own enterprise and encourages them to work with mentors, alumni and other business advisors. MORE
Finance faculty member recognized for Excellence in Service

(July 6, 2020) Deanne Butchey, university lecturer of finance, has been honored with the Faculty Award for Excellence in Service by FIU’s Office of the Provost. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to FIU Business, the university and the community-at-large. She will receive the award at the Faculty Convocation Award Ceremony in fall 2020.
In 2013, Butchey was recognized with the “Spirit of Service-Learning Award” awarded by the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of South Florida Inc. (RPCVSF), the Miami-Dade Teacher of the Year Coalition, and the Armando Alejandre Jr. Foundation. MORE
Hollo School Professor recognized for multidisciplinary real estate research

(June 10, 2020) Zhenguo (Len) Lin, professor and Hollo Research Fellow at the Hollo School of Real Estate, has received the 2020 Graaskamp Award for 2020 from the American Real Estate Society (ARES). The Graaskamp Award recognizes extraordinary iconoclastic thought and/or action throughout a person’s career in the development of a multi-disciplinary philosophy of real estate.
Lin is a previous winner of the ARES Kinnard Scholar Award, which recognizes outstanding real estate scholarship in the early stage of a real estate career. He was ranked No. 2 globally for 2015-2019 for real estate research by the Journal of Real Estate Literature. MORE

(April 12, 2019) William Newburry, chair, Department of International Business and Ryder Eminent Scholar of Global Business, is the first co-recipient of the Cuervo-Cazurra & Newburry Award, given to the scholar who contributed most to the scientific capacity of academics in Latin America and the Caribbean.
