Last week, I had the honor of being part of a panel at FIU College of Business’s EmpowerED event, focused on equipping students with resources and career advice.
As an international student, I’ve faced unique challenges - navigating visa restrictions, limited financial aid and fewer job opportunities - but FIU has helped me thrive. My involvement in the South Beach Wine and Food Festival, for example, provided me with hands-on experience in logistics and customer relations while also offering scholarship opportunities. It reminded me that while the challenges may be greater for international students, the opportunities are available if you seek them out.
EmpowerED is an annual resource fair for business students, showcasing many programs, scholarships, student organizations and networking opportunities with alumni who were once in our shoes. There is a lot to gain, but it’s up to us to make the most of it.
Here are three key takeaways I believe are essential for success:
- Comfort is a Privilege.
Though I often take on new challenges, I still get anxious about stepping out of my comfort zone, especially when attending events alone. But the more I push myself, the easier it becomes. Comfort is something you maintain by embracing discomfort until it fades. - Strive for a Career, Not Just a Job.
In many classes, the focus is landing a job, or gaining specific skills. But there’s more to it. In any role, you gain knowledge, experience or a paycheck -ideally all three. It’s about finding something that aligns with your passion and long-term goals, not just checking boxes. - Pause and Ask Yourself, Why?
Why am I doing this? Why am I posting on LinkedIn? At the end of the day, you are the most important person in your life. You’re the one navigating challenges, building your future, and shaping your experiences. We remember the moments, not the numbers.
As I mentioned during the event, everything and everyone is an opportunity. FIU offers a wealth of resources - clubs, events, certifications, alumni and faculty - that can help you get where you want to go. But it’s up to you to take the first step.
