Application & Requirements

Our Master of Finance candidates are highly-motivated professionals intent on reaching that next level of leadership success. Admissions decisions can be quite competitive. Admission to the Master of Finance program is based on a variety of factors and will be evaluated holistically. Our admissions team carefully screens each application to ensure candidates are an optimal fit for the program demands and objectives.

Admission Requirements

What we look at to determine admission eligibility:

A 4-year undergraduate degree or its equivalent
Hold a four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

Minimum GPA of 3.0 on upper-division coursework

We look at your upper-division credits, versus your overall GPA, to determine admission eligibility. Upper-division credits are typically taken in your last two years of your undergraduate program.

Proof of English Proficiency

Applicants who hold an undergraduate or graduate degree from non-English speaking countries must demonstrate English proficiency by taking either:

  • Duolingo (minimum score is 110)
  • TOEFL (minimum scores are: 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based, and 80 internet-based)
  • IELTS (minimum score is 6.5)

Test scores are considered official when sent by the testing center directly to our school. When requesting the official scores, please refer to the Florida International University Institution code code 5206.

GMAT or GRE Exam

We accept either the GMAT or GRE exam. For the GMAT we require a minimum score of 500. For the GRE we require that you meet within the 40th percentile of the quantitative and verbal sections, which is approx. 152 quantitative and 154 verbal.

Exam waiver opportunities available if applicant meets one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Finance undergraduate degree with an upper-division GPA of 3.0, or
  • Minimum four years of relevant professional finance experience with an upper-division GPA of 3.0, or
  • A master’s degree with a 3.0 GPA and an upper-division GPA of 3.0 in undergraduate coursework

What is needed to complete an application:

  • Online Application

    Submit an application by clicking here. Application fee is $30 and nonrefundable.

  • Resume

    Detailing your chronological professional experience, and dates of earned degrees. Internships and part-time employment may be included.

  • Statement of Purpose

    An outline of your professional goals and why you believe the program can help you achieve them. This can be done in essay form, single spaced, 12 pt. font, one-page or in video form. The video should be no more than 3 minutes where you will have to be present for the majority of it and would have to be uploaded to YouTube with the privacy setting at either ‘public’ or ‘unlisted.’ You can send the essay or the video link to my email.

  • Official Transcripts

    Official transcript (an official record of a student’s work, showing courses taken and grades achieved) from all previously attended colleges and/or universities. Transcripts must be sent directly to FIU by all formerly attended institutions in a sealed university envelope.

    • If the language of instruction at your institution was not English, then you must provide the original-language copies of all transcripts and diplomas as described above along with translations from a recognized translation agency or a certified translator.
    • Foreign educational credentials: Our Office of Admissions evaluates foreign credentials internally as part of the admission process at no cost to you.

  • Proof of Degree

    A copy of your diploma. If you have not yet received your diploma then we will need a letter from your advisor or program leadership detailing your major and expected graduation date.

    If the language of instruction at your institution was not English, then you must provide the original-language copies of all transcripts and diplomas as described above along with translations from a recognized translation agency or a certified translator.

  • Official Test Scores (If applicable)

    If you need to take an English Proficiency and/or the GMAT/GRE exam, the testing service must release the scores to us. FIU Institutional code is 5206.

    Florida Residents: Two proofs of residency. Documents must be dated one year prior to the term you are seeking admissions. For a list of acceptable documents please visit the Florida Residency for Tuition page. Please note that a voter’s registration for US citizens will work as both a proof of residency and citizenship.

  • International Students Seeking a Visa

    If do not have a valid visa for study in the U.S., you will need an initial I-20. FIU creates this document for you to go to the U.S. Embassy/Consulate in your home country to request the F-1 student visa. If you are currently in the U.S. on a valid I-20 and are transferring your visa to FIU or another program within FIU, you’ll need a new I-20.

Last day for International and Domestic students to submit the online application, and all supporting academic credentials, appropriate test scores, and Declaration and Certification of Finances.

Mandatory Program Orientation

Admitted students will be required to complete mandatory orientation events in order to begin the program. Orientation events include:

  • New Student Orientation
  • Professional Development Seminar
  • Financial Tutorials

Events are often on three to four separate days.
