Sushil K. Gupta
Sushil K. Gupta is a Pay Cargo Professor at the Department of Information Systems and Business Analytics at Florida International University’s (FIU) College of Business. He has taught at the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), University of Delhi in Delhi, India and at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Gupta has also served FIU as vice provost for academic affairs and associate dean of the College of Engineering. Gupta is an honorary professor at Universidad Ricardo Palma in Lima, Peru. Gupta is a highly esteemed scholar in the field of production and operations management. His research interests include production scheduling, mathematical modeling, project management, supply chain management, e-business and disaster management. He has published in top-ranking professional journals including Production and Operations Management, Management Science, IIE Transactions, European Journal of Operational Research, International Journal of Production Research, Omega, Computers and Industrial Engineering, and Socio-Economic Planning Sciences.
Gupta is one of the founding members of the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS) and has played a key role in its initiation, development, and growth. He was POMS vice president for member activities (1994), POMS president (1996) and is currently serving as its executive director (since 1997). He also serves on the advisory board of Production and Operations Management – the flagship journal of POMS, the POMS board and on the board of POMS College of Humanitarian Operations and Crisis Management.
Gupta was elected a POMS fellow in 2004. POMS also bestowed the honor on Gupta by awarding him the first POMS Distinguished Service Award in 2012. This award, starting in 2013, is renamed as the Sushil K. Gupta POMS Distinguished Service Award to honor Gupta for his dedicated services to POMS.
Gupta has been the recipient of many other prestigious awards that include: the "FIU Foundation Excellence in Research/Scholarship” award, the “Distinguished Scholarly Research Award” of the College of Business at FIU, a “Fulbright Fellowship” to do research work at the Sloan School of Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Commonwealth Scholarship for graduate work at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada, and the Dr. V.K.R.V. Rao Gold Medal for his first place ranking in the MBA graduating class in Delhi, India.
Gupta is a co-author of POMS-Production and Operations Management Software, a software package published by Allyn & Bacon for an operations management course. In addition he has written two books that include “Production Planning and Control, Text and Cases,” published by the University of Delhi, and “Production Scheduling Techniques,” published by K.P. Bagchi and Company in Delhi, India.
Gupta has also received the teaching excellence award from the College of Business at FIU. Gupta, in his capacity as the director of corporate and global programs in the College of Engineering, initiated the development and promotion of the College of Engineering’s corporate and global programs in several countries that include China, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, Taiwan, Turkey, Venezuela and Yugoslavia.
Gupta holds Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, in Bombay, India, and MBA from Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) at the University of Delhi in India, a Master of Applied Sciences in Industrial Engineering from University of Toronto in Canada, and PhD from FMS at the University of Delhi in India.
