Master of Science in Information SystemsShould you pursue a Master of Science in Information Systems?

A Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) is one of the highest degrees available in the field of IT. These programs seamlessly develop and integrate technical and information systems management skills.

The curriculum contains courses in IS function, database management, systems analysis and design, project management, business process design, security management, business analytics, and more.

The MSIS program and its focus on business management are designed to prepare you for managerial and executive roles. The primary job function in management information systems is to strategize what others must deliver. You’ll combine your people skills and tech skills to influence and change your organization.

What can I do with an M.S. in Information Systems degree?

Management of IT systems is considered a business function because of its impact on businesses. The goal is to make the technology perform in the business’ interest.

An MSIS opens doors to positions in companies, such as:

  • Chief Information Officer
  • Chief Information Security Officer
  • Chief Technology Officers
  • IT Director/Manager
  • IS/Database Analyst
  • Database Administrator
  • Cybersecurity Analyst
  • And others

What do I need to know in order to apply to an M.S. in Information Systems program?

Requirements for each program differ. A typical requirement is having a bachelor’s degree in a business-related field or IT. At FIU, we also require minimum knowledge in the following areas:

  • Introductory level programming languages
  • HTML
  • Introduction to databases
  • Microsoft office

There are also several resources provided by the university to cover this requirement or provide refreshers.

What is the outlook for jobs in the information systems field?

The Wall Street Journal released a list of “The Most Promising Careers of the Next Decade” in September 2019. It ranked computer and information systems managers No. 6 out of 800 other jobs. This ranking was based on wages and projected demand provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

In 2018, BLS reported the median pay for computer and information systems managers as $142,530. They also predicted an 11% growth between 2018-2028, adding 46,800 more jobs to the industry.

Should you pursue an M.S. in Information Systems degree?

An M.S. in Information Systems program offers a great return on investment. Extensive knowledge in IT is not required to begin, but the skills developed within the program provide a strong foundation in both IT and business management to prepare you to take on managerial roles in IT departments of any industry.
