MS in Health Informatics & AnalyticsMentors

A few words of mentorship can go far in career guidance. Mentors can share insight into an industry, open doors to professional contacts, and provide advice to students about achieving their professional goals. Through our MSHIA Mentor Program, we hope to allow students to:

  1. grow their network
  2. learn more about the vast expanse of health informatics by connecting with those in practice

Mentors are provided to help students acclimate to the professional space and develop a vision of their own goals over the course of a very brief 15-month academic program, thereby preparing them for a smoother transition after graduation. We have two forms of mentorship in our mentor network. Alumni Mentors serve as guides to students embarking on their HIT degree journey. HIT industry mentors who act as vital connections to HIT practice through such things as guest presentations, career discussions, and engagement with class projects and activities.

Suzy Espinosa
Senior Manager - Acquisitions and Strategic Initiatives
linkedin- Suzy Espinosa

When the company embarks on acquisitions of hospitals or when we build new ones, my team coordinates the activities related to converting legacy healthcare IT systems from previous ones to our company's standard systems. We implement new EMRs, interfaces, biomedical devices, and associated software. In a sense, Health IT is my role because getting these large-scale clinical systems implementations off the ground requires knowledge of how the systems interact with each other, how they help hospitals provide safe, quality care, and how revenue cycle systems are integrated into clinical care and hospital administration.

Become a HIT industry mentor

We welcome health informatics professionals to contribute to a meaningful educational experience by sharing their “words of wisdom” derived from professional experience in Health IT with Master of Health Informatics and Analytics (or MSHIA) students with one or more touch points as they prepare to enter or advance in the field.

  • It gives you the opportunity to continue establishing yourself as an HIT leader.
  • You can help shape the HIT leaders of tomorrow early in their path.
  • You expand your professional network through a university program that connects academics and HIT professionals who want to impact lives and transform communities.

Education becomes more tangible when students can bridge practice and industry with their studies. As an industry mentor, you can connect with students through one or more touchpoints in a variety of ways (e.g., short information interview about your experience, class speaker, class project advisor). Faculty and students find great benefit in professional connection to discuss insights and experiences in the world of health informatics. These connections help our students make an impact on the future of the Health IT industry. These experiences also help your organization identify promising candidates for future opportunities.
