International Students

We are required by the Department of Homeland Security/US Citizenship and Immigration Services to carefully check the financial ability of each student prior to requesting approval to issue your SEVIS I-20. Therefore, it is important that you are aware of the cost of attending FIU and that you have all necessary funds to support yourself. International students planning to start a master program at FIU and that will require a F1 visa, must submit the following documents listed below. Please keep in mind that all financial documents must be dated no earlier than 6 months from the program start date.

  1. Declaration of Finance (DCF) form – Submit a completed and signed Declaration of Finance (DCF) form. Please note that the DCF form must reflect, at a minimum, the total cost of the program (tuition, books, and medical insurance). Download the Declaration of Finance (DCF) form.
  2. Official bank letter – The letter must be printed on the official bank letterhead, and contain the following information:

a) State the name of the account holder (applicant or sponsor) 
b) Be signed and/or stamped by an authorized member of the bank 
c) Show sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses (check the program cost plus living expenses table.) 
d) Come in a sealed envelope from the bank

Bank letters are accepted from the following types of accounts: savings, checking, current, or money market accounts. Any other account available would need to specify if the account is liquid, or if the funds are available for withdrawal at any time.

  1. Sponsor letter – If the aforementioned bank letter is in the name of a sponsor (e.g., family member, employer, etc.), the sponsor will need to submit a signed letter stating that they will be financially responsible for all expenses while the student is pursuing a degree at FIU. Please download a sample sponsor letter.
  2. F1 transfer form - International students currently pursuing a degree program in the U.S. must submit a completed F1 transfer form. Section 1 must be completed and signed by the student, and Section 2 must be completed and signed by the international student advisor at the student’s current institution. Please make sure all fields are completed including SEVIS release date and SEVIS ID number. Download the F-1 Transfer form.
  3. Copy of passport - To verify all names are spelled correctly on the I-20, and that there are no errors on the birth date.

Applicants with foreign educational credentials in a language other than English must provide a translation from a recognized translation agency or official translator. The Graduate Admissions Office, as part of the admissions process, evaluates foreign credentials internally at no cost to the applicant.
