Master of International BusinessCurriculum

As an elite graduate program in international business, our Master of International Business builds upon your prior business education and experience, developing and strengthening your specific competencies in international business management. Every course is taught from a global business perspective.

Your program includes a suite of courses that may be taken in any sequence. The only exceptions are: 

  • The introductory seminar required of all students upon entry
  • The International Business Environment course, which must be taken before International Business Policy
  • The Master’s Project in International Business, which must be taken during your last semester

Core course

This course deals with the environmental variables that affect the conduct of business across borders.  It covers both economic and socio-political analyses in terms of how they affect and shape the conduct of international trade and investment.  You also are exposed to the major global and regional institutions that regulate trade and finance and the major climatic, geographic, demographic, and social movements that are shaping the business world.

This course covers aspects of strategic financial environment and management of firms that operate in a global arena; to include recent developments in financial strategy, international trade and economic decision-making.

This course explores the management of technology and its relationship to the dynamics of globalization in production in both the manufacturing and service industries.  It focuses primarily on the management of international supply chains and on the coordination of manufacturing and service activities across different geographies. In addition to analyses of corporate logistics, the course emphasizes international business process outsourcing and the modeling of international business problems.

Analysis and application of theory and problem solving for marketing management in the global environment. Emphasis is on the role of marketing in the multinational organization, planning and executing multi-country marketing strategies, managing and controlling international marketing operations, and evaluating global customers.

This course analyzes the legal environment and problems facing international business and multinational corporations.  Topics include international regulatory institutions and the framework of international trade and investment law.  Also covered are antitrust law, the regulation of technical transfers, securities law, intellectual property and contracts, and jurisdiction issues.

This course emphasizes analysis of corporate strategies in a rapidly developing and changing world environment.  It includes discussion of forecasting, planning, and contingency strategies. The course is taught by the case method and stresses the environmental and institutional constraints on decision making within the organization.

This course examines the functions of management in an international context: organization, communication, strategic planning, control, motivation, leadership, and human resource management. The topics include the cultural differences behind different managerial styles and customs.

Presentation of the nature, techniques and uses of accounting from the perspective of people who manage businesses and investments in businesses. Covers both financial and management accounting.

This course is offered each semester and serves as a synthesis of the program.  You will be organized in multinational groups and assigned to a local or international company or non-profit organization that has agreed to participate in the program by contributing a current strategic or operational issue that they are facing.  Working in teams, under the supervision of a faculty member, you will research the problem, analyze the data obtained, and present recommendations to management.

Elective Course (2 of them)

Elective offering varies depending on the semester, the following are some options:

Introduction to entrepreneurship in international contexts and its role in economic development.

Special Topics in International Business (as an option, it can be at a partner institution abroad) or other graduate course with international business content.

Allows graduate students to work in jobs significantly related to their major area of study and career goals. This is supervised work with carefully designed and monitored work assignments. Specific placement must be approved by the faculty advisor prior to enrollment. Work performed on the current job cannot be used for internship credit.

Please note that a Language course is not eligible to count towards an elective or overall program course credits.

Seminar Course

A three-credit seminar course is required to complete the program. It is typically offered during the first semester and is required of all incoming students. To satisfy this requirement students must comply with attendance and course assignments. This is a three-part series seminar which includes the following topics:

You will gain a broad perspective of what it means to do business in today’s global economy.

Explore an array of current issues that affect international business through discussions with experts and invited speakers, including senior executives from global companies.

This seminar will teach students to facilitate activities to improve group communication, trust, decision-making, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
