Admission Requirements

Our Master of Science in Human Resource Management candidates are highly motivated professionals intent on reaching that next level of leadership success. Admission to the program is competitive. Applications are evaluated holistically based on a variety of factors including undergraduate GPA, employment experience, a statement of purpose, letters of recommendations, and standardized test scores. Our admissions team carefully screens each application to ensure candidates are an optimal fit for the program demands and objectives.

To be eligible for admission to the MSHRM program, applicants must demonstrate academic and professional preparedness. Admissions are based on a portfolio approach:

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • GPA in upper divisions course work (3.0 preferred)
  • Professional experience in human resources*
  • Full-time work experience*
  • GMAT or GRE**
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Interviews conducted upon submission of complete portfolio

*A minimum of five years of professional full-time work experience of which three years are in human resources is preferred. If no work experience, a graduate degree from an accredited university with a 3.0 GPA may be considered.

**GMAT/GRE may be waived for experienced applicants or applicants with strong academic credentials.

An interview may be requested upon submission of a complete portfolio.

Graduate student applicants whose studies were completed in a non-English speaking country must demonstrate proficiency in English by presenting a minimum score of 80 on the iBT TOEFL (equivalent to 550 on paper-based version) or 6.5 overall of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

  • Complete the Graduate Admission Application. Select “Create User Account” (Unless you have created one previously). Complete all required fields.
  • There is a non-refundable application fee of US $30.00.

  1. Official transcripts from all previously attended colleges and/or universities must be submitted. The original transcripts must be in a sealed enveloped (unopened) from the issuing-institution.

    If the language of instruction at your institution was not English, then you must submit official transcripts and diplomas in the original language as described above AND:

    • Submit separate English-language translation of all academic records and diplomas. The translation should come from a professional, certified translator. It must contain all information shown on the original-language documents and mirror them as precisely as possible.

      Please note that FIU accepts transcript and diploma translations, and all evaluations of official academic records are to be performed by FIU staff only. Some suggested translation agencies are found on the University Graduate School website.

  2. Official proof of degree. Applicants with foreign educational credentials must provide a copy of the original diploma.

  3. Professional resume.

  4. Statement of purpose: A well-written statement describing your professional goals and reasons for pursuing a graduate degree at Florida International University. The statement of purpose should be around 500 words.

  5. Two letters of recommendation from employers, faculty or professional associates.

  6. GMAT or GRE: This may be waived for applicants with 3 to 5 years of work experience or for exceptionally qualified applicants with high GPAs.

  7. English proficiency: Applicants whose studies where completed in a country whose official language is not English, must take either the TOEFL or IELTS – a University list of exemptions is available here. These tests are available worldwide. There is a fee for the examination. Minimum scores for the TOEFL are: 80 internet-based, 550 paper-based, and 213 computer-based. Minimum score for the IELTS is 6.5. To obtain information about the TOEFL exam, please contact the English Language Institute 305-348-2222, or visit www.toefl.org. When requesting the official scores, please refer to the Florida International University Institution code 5206. To obtain more information about the IELTS, visit www.ielts.org.

Florida Residents: Two proofs of residency. Documents must be dated one year prior to the start of the term you are seeking admissions. A list of acceptable documents is available here.

International Applicants

International applicants seeking an F-1 (student) visa must also submit the additional documents listed below.

  • A completed and signed Declaration of Finances (DCF) form. Please note that the minimum amount in the DCF must be at least $62,000 for 2016-2017 academic year.

  • Bank letter has to reflect $62,000.

  • Sponsor letter (Waived if applicant is sponsoring self). A sample sponsor letter is available here.

  • Proof of medical insurance. The cost of this insurance is not covered by the program’s tuition and fees. For information on program coverage and alternate compliance, please visit the University Health Services Medical Insurance Policy for International Students page.

***Only those applicants who have submitted complete application packets will be considered. Meeting the minimum requirements is not a guarantee of admissions.
