Certificate in Healthcare Management

The Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Management program is designed for working healthcare professionals who want to enhance their proficiency and breadth of knowledge in the healthcare management field. The objective of this graduate certificate is to provide individuals, who do not wish to pursue the Healthcare MBA, with a basic understanding of the context, management and reimbursement issues for health care organizations. It prepares students for a career in a healthcare environment by providing additional management skills and knowledge of the current factors affecting the healthcare delivery system. The certificate consists of five graduate classes.

Curriculum

Classes are structured into "blocks" or 8-week sessions, with each block consisting of one course:

  • MAN 6095 - Management of Healthcare Organizations in the 21st Century
  • MAN 6830 - Organization Information Systems
  • MAN 6501 - Operations Management
  • MAN 6098 - Management of Healthcare Finance and Reimbursement
  • MAN 6097 - Managerial Decision Making in Health Economics

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Management program, prospective students must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum 3.0 GPA in upper-level undergraduate coursework.

  • Application Procedures

     

    The procedure for admission to the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Management is as follows:

    Please complete the online application at: http://gradschool.fiu.edu/admissions.shtml under Graduate Certificate Programs. Select Certificate from the degree level drop-down menu (on the Academic Information page of the online application form) and Healthcare Management from the “major” drop-down menu listing all FIU certificate programs.

    • Pay a $30 application fee . Most major credit cards are accepted. Checks or money orders are also accepted and should be made payable to Florida International University.
    • Send official transcripts from all previously attended universities, in a sealed envelope
      • A four year Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent degree from an accredited institution as well as a minimum upper division grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher is required.
      • The original transcripts must be submitted in an envelope sealed by the degree-granting institution. If you are an alumnus of FIU, there is no need to have transcripts sent.
      • Students whose official transcripts¹ are not in English will be required to have said document translated. If this applies to you please ask your university to provide two original transcripts. The first set of transcripts must remain in the sealed envelope. The second set of transcripts should be sent to an official translator.
      • Official proof of degree: a notarized copy of the original diploma is required if the degree is not posted on the official transcripts. Official translation also required if not in English.
    • Applicants who hold an undergraduate or graduate degree from an institution where the language of instruction is not English must demonstrate English proficiency by taking either:
      • TOEFL (minimum scores are: 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based, and 80 internet-based)
      • IELTS (minimum score is 6.5)
      • Pearson Test of English – Academic (minimum score is 53)
      • Cambridge English – Advanced
        TOEFL and IELTS test scores are considered official when sent by the testing center directly to our school. When requesting the official scores, please refer to the Florida International University Institution code 5206.
    • Submit a current resume of professional experience.
    • Submit a statement of purpose: a one-page essay describing your professional goals and reasons for pursuing the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Management degree at Florida International University.


    For international students

    International students applying for the F-1 student visa will be required to submit financial documentation. Financial documents may be submitted during the application process; however, these must be recent (6 months or less from the program start date). Therefore, make sure when sending these that the dates on these documents are valid for the term you are applying for.

    • Request a letter from your bank or the bank of your sponsor (a parent, for example) stating that you or your sponsor have sufficient funds of at least $33,722 for tuition and living expenses. The types of accounts from which these bank letters are accepted are: savings, checking or money market accounts.
    • If the bank account and aforementioned letter are in the name of a sponsor, the sponsor will need to submit a signed sponsor letter stating that he or she will fund your education and expenses while you are enrolled in the Graduate Certificate program.
    • Submit a completed and signed Declaration of Finances (DCF) form. Please note that the minimum amount in the DCF must be at least $33,722 for the academic year 2015-2016.

Financial Aid

Students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare are not eligible to receive federal financial aid. Students have the option of applying for a Private/Alternative Loan to help cover 100% of the cost of the program.

Private student loans are non-federal educational loans available from a variety of national lending institutions. Eligibility for these loans is based upon a student’s credit history, income and other requirements set by the lender. Students should request a copy of their credit report and check it for any errors prior to submitting an application for a private loan. An application can be requested directly from the private lender of your choice.

FIU provides a sampling of private loans at https://www.elmselect.com/ ELM select is an external website that allows students to review the Lender List, compare products, and apply for private loans.

Private Loan Certification Process and Disbursement

The U.S. Department of Education requires that borrowers complete an Applicant Self-Certification form when requesting any private educational loans. Do not submit your self-certification form to the financial aid office, as FIU cannot complete the form for you. Once you have completed the form you will need to submit it to your lender.

The following sections of the form must be completed from your financial aid information available by logging-in to your account on my.fiu.edu under View Financial Aid link.

  • Log-in to your account at MyFIU.
  • To view the step by step screen shot.
    • Click on "View Financial Aid" in the center of the screen
    • Select the correct Aid Year ex. 2017 in the left hand side of the screen
    • The loan Period is composed of the academic year, the first day of class in the fall term and the last day of classes in the spring term (August to April). The summer term has a separate loan period and its composed of the start and end date of the summer term (May-August).
    • Sign the form and Send it to your lender. Always check with your lender for the possibility of signing your application electronically (E-sign) the Private Education Loan Self-Certification Form on your lender’s web site.
  • Make sure that you submit all required documents to your lender for loan approval and remember to send us an email at cobfa@fiu.edu letting us know you have a private loan approval pending.
  • FIU will certify the private loan in our system and you it will be posted to your account and funds will be released to you once we have receive the loan funds from your lender. Please contact your lender to get your specific loan disbursement date.
