Center Offers New International Opportunities for Students and Faculty

FIU's Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER), housed at FIU Business, is inviting alumni with international connections to help it develop global learning opportunities for students.

The CIBER, designed to serve as a nexus between Latin America and Asia, is one of just 15 CIBERs nationwide to be funded by the federal government and the only one in Florida.

A key focus is to help students gain global perspective, and FIU Business alumni are uniquely qualified to help. "We need alumni who work internationally, or work for companies with offices outside the U.S., to offer internships to our students and make opportunities available," said CIBER Associate Director Jennifer Hilton Montero.

CIBER's existing internship programs provide annual funding of $20,000 for business students to participate in international opportunities. In one, BMI Financial Group partnered with FIU Business to deliver the BMI Global Business Experience, a blended scholarship and experiential learning opportunity. The initiative allows juniors and seniors to participate in a summer program at one of BMI's offices in Ecuador or Costa Rica.

CIBER's existing international internship programs provide annual funding of $20,000 for business students to participate in international internship opportunities.

Other CIBER initiatives include a Faculty Development in International Business program, through which faculty members participate in global engagement opportunities in such countries as South Korea, India, Peru and Panama.

The center has also awarded $20,000 for research projects to 12 faculty members from across disciplines at FIU Business. Doctoral student Daniel Andrews received a $3,000 scholarship to further his research by visiting WU Vienna University of Economics and Business and to attend upcoming conferences such as those of the Academy of International Business and Academy of Management.
