  • LO1: Students should be able to independently develop and understand how to implement legally sustainable and ethical HR planning, recruitment, selection and retention processes; training programs; performance management and appraisal systems, feedback and disciplinary measures; implement compensation, benefit, and reward systems; and personnel policies and labor-management practices.
  • LO2: Recognize opportunities and understand how to implement activities that foster constructive organizational change through commitment, motivation, teamwork, wellness, safety, and values.
  • LO3: Contrast international HR practices across various cultures and recognize necessary adjustments for cross cultural differences.

Calendar

The Chapman Graduate School of Business admits students to the Master of Science in Human Resource Management program in the spring and in the fall. An accelerated, weekend program, with classes held on Saturdays at FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus, it offers a convenient schedule for working professionals.

  • Program requires 36 credit-hours of coursework.
  • Classes are held on Saturdays (full day) at Modesto A. Maidique Campus in four- hour blocks (8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.) with a one- hour lunch break from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Two courses are offered per eight week session, which is four classes per traditional semester.
  • Time to completion is 12 months.

FAQs

What kind of undergraduate degree must I have to qualify for this program? 
FIU requires you to have a four-year bachelor degree from an accredited university.

Do I include my certified transcripts with the application? 
FIU requires that official transcripts are sent in directly by the college(s) or university (ies) you attend(ed). You cannot send in copies of these transcripts yourself.
 
If you are an alumnus (ae) of FIU, there is no need to have transcripts sent. If you attended a university outside the U.S. and the transcripts are not in English, they must be translated by a certified translator. The translation and an official copy of the transcripts must be submitted.

Who is required to submit TOEFL?
Applicants whose native language is not English or who did not obtain a degree in the U.S. need to take the TOEFL test. They will need to score at least 550 on the paper-based, 213 on the computer-based, 80 on the internet-based test, or an equivalent score on a comparable examination. For how many years are my test scores valid?                  
GMAT scores - 5 years
GRE scores - 5 years
TOEFL scores - 2 years

How many students are there in the classes? 
The maximum number of students per class is 58.
 
Is a thesis required in the program? 
No, there is no required thesis.

Can classes be waived if I took some MSHRM classes in another university? 
Classes taken in another university program will not be waived since this is a 12-month, lock-step program. Courses from other programs also are not transferable.
 
Can I pursue two graduate degrees at the same time? 
No. Unfortunately, you cannot pursue two degrees at the same time at FIU. 
 
Can I prolong the MSHRM program for more than 12 months? 
No, you cannot prolong the MSHRM for more than 12 months. Since it is a lock-step program, you must remain with your class throughout the entire sequence until the program is concluded.

Can I apply for financial aid? 
Yes. You can apply for financial aid online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ or pick up an application at any high school, college or university. For specific information regarding financial aid or to find out the status of your application please contact Melissa Hew, Chapman Financial Aid Manager at 305-348-4234 or Melissa.Hew@fiu.edu. Application Process and Requirements

To apply for admission to the Chapman Graduate School of Business, applicants should submit the following to:

  • Official transcripts from all previously attended colleges and/or universities. Transcripts must be sent directly to the MSHRM Program by all formerly attended institution(s) in a sealed university envelope.
  • Official proof of degree
    A notarized copy of the original diploma is required if the degree is not posted on the official transcript(s).
  • Meet either one of the two:

    Achieve a minimum score of 500 on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or a score of 1000 (combination of verbal and quantitative) on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and have earned a minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA) in undergraduate study. FIU university's code is: 5206.

    Have a minimum of five years of professional (exempt) experience, of which at least two years are in the HR field and have earned a minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA) in undergraduate study.
  • Resume.  A current resume of professional experiences.
  • Statement of purpose
  • A well-written statement describing your professional goals and reasons for pursuing a graduate degree at Florida International University.
  • Two letters of recommendation from employers, faculty or professional associates.
  • Proof of US residency/citizenship
International applicants and applicants who did not obtain a degree in the U.S. should submit all of the documents above and in addition, those listed below.
  • If official transcript(s) is not in English, a second copy of the transcript must be requested from previously attended institution(s) for translation by an official translation agency. The official translation as well as the requested official copy of the transcript(s) must be submitted.
  • Official TOEFL score (minimum score is 550 on the paper-based, 213 on the computer-based, or 80 on the internet based test) or official IELTS score (minimum score is 6.5). The official score must be sent directly by Educational Testing Service (ETS).  FIU’s university code is: 5206
  • Submit a completed and signed Declaration of Finances (DCF) form.  Please note that the minimum amount in the DCF must be at least $55,000 for 2011-2012 academic year.
  • Bank letter has to reflect $55,000.
  • Sponsor letter (if applicable).

Tuition & Scholarships

Tuition

Tuition for the MSHRM program for 2011-2012 academic year is $2,370 per course for Florida- residents and $2,670 per course for non-Florida residents and international students. All fees are subject to change.

The cost of tuition for a Florida resident is approximately $28,438; $32,038 for non-Florida residents and international students.

Once you are accepted into the program, you will be required to submit a $750 non-refundable residency fee, which will be applied toward the fees for the first semester in the program. All fees are subject to change.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

We recommend that you begin thinking about your financial aid needs and options during the initial admissions process to the Chapman Graduate School of Business.

Scholarships

The MSHRM program has a limited number of partial scholarships available to most qualified students. These scholarships are merit based and they are usually awarded to student with the highest combination of GPA and GMAT or GRE after all students are admitted to the program. Financial Aid

To receive financial assistance you must be fully admitted to an FIU degree program.

To receive need-based assistance you must complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Completing the FAFSA correctly and submitting any requested document(s) by the annual priority deadline date, March 1st, increases your potential to receive the maximum financial aid for which you are eligible.

LOAN ELIGIBILITY

Eligibility/Requirements
Recipients of federal loans must meet the following criteria:

• Completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Application for each academic year

• Demonstrate financial need;

• Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen;

• Be registered with Selective Service, if required;

• Admitted to a degree seeking program or an eligible certificate program;

• Be enrolled at least half time (6 credits/undergraduates-5 credits/graduates) when loan proceeds are received;

• Not be in default on a previous student loan or owe a repayment on a previous federal financial aid award received at any institution;

• Applicant can not have an adverse credit history (for Graduate Plus loans only).

Additional requirements may apply depending on the aid programs awarded to you.

LOAN OPTIONS

Loan Types:

Subsidized – is awarded to student’s demonstrating a financial need as determined by the federal processor as a result of your FAFSA application. Your loan eligibility is also based on your academic level (see chart below). Interest payments on this loan is subsidized (you are not charged interest) by the federal government while you are in school or during authorized periods of deferments. You begin repayment six months after you graduate or stop attending at least half-time.

Unsubsidized – a student does not have to demonstrate financial need to receive this loan. You may borrow the cost of attendance minus all financial aid awarded and based on your academic level (see chart below). Interest payments on this loan are not subsidized by the government. You can choose to pay the interest while you are enrolled fulltime or it can be accrued and added to the part of the principal of the loan that you owe. You begin repayment six months after you graduate or stop attending at least half-time.

Graduate Plus - Graduate students are now eligible to borrow under the PLUS loan program up to their cost of attendance minus other estimated financial assistance. Students need to first apply with the Department of Education to initiate the loan application process; the terms and conditions applicable to Parent Plus Loans also apply to Graduate Plus Loans. All Graduate Plus Loans are awarded to all graduate students who meet the eligibility requirement upon receipt of your financial aid award letter for each academic year. This loan is a credit-worthiness loan which will require a credit history approval. Interest Payments on this loan are not subsidized by the government.

Graduate Need Grant - awards based on financial need which do not have to be repaid.

• To be eligible applicant must have an EFC between 0 – 7500

• Must complete FAFSA by March 1st priority deadline
