Back to: Home

[Printable Version]

Overview

Capital budgeting is a fundamental business activity with huge implications for corporate investment strategy. For non-financial managers, it can be difficult to grasp capital budgeting and the calculations involved in computing the value of money over time. For entrepreneurs, knowledge of capital budgeting is essential to creating a business plan and gaining access to capital for growth.

FIU’s Capital Budgeting and Investment Analysis program gives participants an understanding of the impact of capital budgeting on financial decisions. Participants learn how interest rates, inflation, and taxes factor into evaluating returns on investment. This knowledge is critical to making good financial decisions that create long-term value.

Highlights

At some point in your career, you will be confronted with investment questions such as whether to upgrade IT infrastructure or whether to acquire a business or property. Your ability to analyze such opportunities and their potential contribution to your company’s bottom line—in the short- and long-run—is a test of your business acumen.

This course covers the most important criteria for determining whether to invest including the impact on cash flows and return on equity. These metrics enable you to compare different projects in order to select the best potential investments.

Unique Features

This program prepares you to participate in corporate decision making at the highest level—where strategic investment decisions are made. Regardless of your current familiarity with investment analysis, you will gain a working knowledge of key terminology and calculations.

This course introduces you to the methods used by investment analysts including:

  • instruction in the use of a modern business calculator
  • principles for determining cash flows, compound value and yield to maturity
  • calculations for the average rate of return, payback period and net present value.

You’ll practice financial decision making using real-world investment scenarios to ensure that you can apply the tools in your professional capacity.

    • an owner or senior manager confronting investment decisions
    • anticipating the need for a loan to start or expand your business, or
