FIU Students compete in the RISE Competition held in the University of Dayton
Sector Managers from the Student Managed Investment Fund had the opportunity to travel to the University of Dayton to compete in the RISE competition held annually. Each year, this prestigious student forum extends an invitation to business professionals to share in the first day of a two-and-a-half day event. The featured speakers are the best and the brightest from Wall Street, corporate America, government, and the financial media.
The students had the opportunity to present their SMIF portfolio and talk about their strategy as well as different valuation methods that are implemented in their portfolio. For Bernardo Castro, Alejandro Real, and Matthew Sorkin, it was a great opportunity to network with professionals and have insight into different student led portfolios throughout many universities along with speakers with years of experience.

Coral Gables finishes Bloomberg Certification
Coral Gables High School students have achieved their Bloomberg Certification over the course of seven weeks. All students passed and were delighted with the results. The instructor-led sessions allow students to have a hands-on approach to Bloomberg and master the key concepts of market sectors such as Equities and Fixed Income.
The focus of this program was to educate the students on the financial software available in the SFFLL Lab and to give them an advantage in the selection for college. The Bloomberg Certification will help the students increase their literacy in finance and proficiency in Bloomberg.

The State Farm Financial Literacy Lab welcomes G. Holmes
Select students from Braddock High School will be coming to the SFFLL lab over seven weeks to earn their Bloomberg certification. The Bloomberg Terminal is a powerful tool used by Investment Banks and Financial Institutions for research and analysis. These students will benefit greatly by gaining their certification for college admission as well as for future business endeavors.

Coral Gables achieving Bloomberg Certification
FIU’s State Farm Financial Literacy Lab assists business-focused students from Coral Gables High School become Bloomberg certified. The instructor-led sessions allow students to have a hands-on approach to Bloomberg and master the key concepts of market sectors such as Equities and Fixed Income.
The focus of this program is for students to have a competitive advantage when starting their college education, as they will be knowledgeable in Bloomberg, one of the premier business software used in the finance industry.

2013 SMIF Annual Report.
On December 12th The Student Managed Investment Fund, led by Professor Flavio Carrillo presented their investment strategies to the Advisory Board of the SMIF. Students worked diligently and arduously to research and analyze sectors, industries, and securities to pick the best stocks for the SMIF portfolio. Students are assigned sectors where they focus on a top-down approach to find undervalued securities in which they can add to the portfolio and add value as well as long term growth.

J. Cooper Abbott visits FIU
J. Cooper Abbott, who manages $30 Billion in assets for Eagle Asset Management came to FIU to share his insight with business students in his presentation “Operating an Effective Equity Portfolio “and as a member of the advisory board for The Student Managed Investment Fund.
Abbott spent an entire day on FIU’s main campus, meeting with students, faculty and staff in addition to the lecture. Part of his time was spent with students from FIU’S Student Managed Investment Fund where he serves on the advisory board. The fund gives students a hands-on experience with equity analysis and portfolio management, and is arranged to resemble a diversified buy-side fund, split into sector teams with managers and analysts.
