Professional Activities

Kiriake Xerohemona studied philosophy as an undergraduate at California State University at Los Angeles. She has
a Masters in Philosophy from the University of Miami, and a Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Miami.
She has been a Lecturer at Florida International University since 2004. She was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2011.

Her primary research interests focus on the philosophical concept of truth and paradoxes, the interconnections between philosophical theories of truth and the concept of deception, and issues in philosophy for children. She has presented at conferences in philosophy, and has published in philosophy. She has reviewed submissions for the Florida Philosophical Association and Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER).

She was the Director for the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program at FIU from 2006 to 2015 overseeing and mentoring more than 25 students. In 2013, she co-wrote the self-study for the program. She has been a member of the Graduate Faculty since 2010. She has been a member and/or chair of several committees at the department, and at the university such as student learning outcomes, library, personnel, hiring, and UCC First Year Experience, among others.

 In the spring of 2017 and fall 2017, she was awarded the Provost LA Initiative Award for an a face-to-face  Introduction to Logic course.
In 2016, she participated in the Residential Workshop in Philosophy for Children organized by the Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children by Montclair State University. In the summer of 2017, she participated in CAT summer reading group. In 2008, she founded the  Logic Lab, a walk-in logic tutoring program for Introduction to Logic students. She is responsible for directing the Logic Lab.She has been awarded an Adjunct Teaching of Excellence Award and a mini-travel grant from the Academy for the Art of Teaching at FIU.

Since 2004 she has been an advisory member for Archimedean Schools, a K-12 non-profit 501(c) (3) organization, sponsored by Miami-Dade county public schools. In 2004 she drafted the proposal for incorporating the Philosophy of Children educational component in the  middle school. The proposal was approved by the Miami-Dade School Board in 2005. From  2004 to 2008 she was an advisory member for the  Archimedean Middle Conservatory.  From 2008 and onwards she has been an advisory member of Archimedean Upper Conservatory, and she is responsible for developing the annual philosophy curriculum and for mentoring teachers responsible for teaching philosophy at the high school level.    She is currently in charge of implementing the Philosophy for Children curriculum at  the elementary school ( Archimedean Academy). This will be a year long project commencing in the fall of 2018.    It will focus on introducing teachers who will facilitate philosophical dialogue with children both the theoretical and practical basis of Philosophy for Children and it will  incorporate, among other things,  organizing workshops, seminars, reading groups, and identifying resources for teachers  who will participate in the program.
