Professional Activities

José de la Torre was the J.K. Batten Professor in Strategy (now Emeritus) and Founding Dean of the Chapman Graduate School of Business at Florida International University. He is the Founding Executive Director of the EMBA Consortium for Global Business Innovation since 2011, and a Visiting Professor at the McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University. Previously (1986-2002) he was Professor of International Business Strategy at UCLA's Anderson School where he chaired the Strategy Group and was the Founding Director of UCLA's Center for International Business Education and Research. He served as Professor of International Business and Chair of the Strategy and Environment Area at INSEAD, France (1975-86); was on the faculty at the Institute of International Business at Georgia State University (1970-75); and a Research Associate at the Harvard Business School.  He has held visiting appointments at business schools in Latin America (INCAE, U. del Valle and U. Adolfo Ibáñez) and Europe (Stockholm School of Economics and Theseus Institute).

Professor de la Torre is the author of over 60 books and articles and more than 30 case studies in the field of international business and strategy.  He has written on the management of multinational firms, the relationship between corporate strategy and government policy and on foreign investment in developing countries.  His books include The Activities of IT-Multinationals in the European Community, EEC, Brussels (1985); Clothing-Industry Adjustments in Developed Countries, Macmillan, London (1986); and Managing the Global Corporation, McGraw-Hill, New York (2000).  Recent articles deal with the structure and efficiency of multi-country operations in multinational companies, the management of international corporate alliances, the determinants of trust in inter-corporate collaborations, the operations of multinational and local companies in Latin America and the importance of Global Citizenship.  His publications have appeared in the Journal of International Business Studies, Academy of Management Review, Management Science, Organization Science, California Management Review, Management Research, European Management Review, Management International Review, Global Strategy Journal, Journal of World Business and other professional journals.

Dr. de la Torre served as a Visiting Scholar at the U.S. Department of Commerce and has consulted with many international companies and organizations in Europe, the United States, Japan and Latin America.  He has been a director of several international companies including Proeza, S.A. in Mexico, Mphasis Corporation in India, the Quantum Group in Florida, and Espirito Santo Bank in Miami. He has been a member of the International Advisory Board of business schools in France (EDHEC), Italy (Bologna Business School), Portugal (ISCTE Business School), Argentina (U. T. di Tella), Uruguay (ORT University) and USA (Georgetown U.).  He is a member of the Miami Support Network for Ashoka, a global social entrepreneurship organization.

Professor de la Torre received his doctorate from the Harvard Business School in 1970, following degrees in aerospace engineering and business administration from the Pennsylvania State University.  He served as President of the European International Business Association (1982) and the Academy of International Business (1999-2000), and on the editorial board of several academic journals.  He is a Fellow of the AIB, the Strategic Management Society, the Business Association for Latin American Studies, and the International Academy of Management; was a member of the Board of Advisors of the Los Angeles Times; and served on the Executive Committee of the Council of Latin American Schools of Management (CLADEA). He founded and chaired the Latin American Forum in Miami and participated in the Council of the Americas-Peterson Institute working party tasked with identifying an agenda for US-Latin American relationships in 2008. In 2013 the International Management Division of the Academy of Management elected him as Distinguished Educator of the Year.

Born and raised in Havana, Cuba, Dr. de la Torre is a U.S. citizen and has lived and worked at various times in Europe, Asia and Latin America.  He is married to Marta Araoz de la Torre, has two grown children and four grandchildren, and resides in Miami, Florida, and Bethesda, Maryland.
