Arthur AgatstonArthur Agatston

Arthur Agatston, MD attended the New York University (NYU) School of Medicine, completed his internal medicine training at Montefiore Medical Center at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and pursued his cardiology fellowship at NYU. He spent a year on staff at NYU while training to combine academic medicine with clinical practice. At Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Dr. Agatston would become director of the Mt. Sinai Non-Invasive Cardiac Lab. Despite the advent of "statin" drugs and the medical community’s better understanding of lipids and cholesterol, Dr. Agatston knew more could be done to prevent heart attacks and strokes. Having observed that his patients weren’t faring well on the standard American Heart Association diet, he investigated diets and the origins of insulin resistance, studied everything about lipids and diet and the role prevention played, and developed theories based on the glycemic index (which reflects the body’s blood sugar and insulin response to food). His studies tested whether hunger and cravings could be controlled by stabilizing insulin levels, thus leading to weight loss, improved blood chemistries, and consequently the prevention of heart attacks and strokes. His resulting “South Beach Diet” not only improved cholesterol and insulin levels but also helped people lose weight. Dr. Agatston’s clinical cardiology practice remains devoted to prevention. He lectures extensively on prevention nationally and internationally and reviews for major medical and cardiology journals including The New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the American Journal of Cardiology, and the Annals of Internal Medicine. He is also an expert consultant for the Clinical Trials Committee of the National Institutes of Health, an associate professor at the University of Miami School of Medicine, and co-director of the prestigious "Symposium on Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease." Dr. Agatston maintains a private practice as a partner at South Florida Cardiology Associates.

Brooke BuckmanBrooke Buckman

Brooke Buckman, PhD earned her Doctorate in Business Management from Arizona State University in 2014. Much of her published research examines how leaders enhance their followers’ levels of engagement, as well as how different types of leader behaviors influence followers' perceptions of fairness in the face of stressful job demands. Dr. Buckman has also published a review of the research regarding how personalities within a team influence teamwork and team effectiveness, and a book chapter that describes the various implications (good and bad) of having strong positive relationships among team members. In conducting this research, Dr. Buckman has worked with a wide variety of organizations and industries, including the United States military, numerous automobile and pharmaceutical organizations in Eastern China, a U.S.-based insurance company, a debt collection agency, a nationwide fast-food chain, and a major hospital network. In her research—and when teaching about human resource-related concepts in the classroom—Dr. Buckman often draws upon her own five years of work experience, both as an external auditor at KPMG, and as a senior financial analyst at Kraft Foods.

Gino Coca-MirGino Coca-Mir

Gino Coca-Mir is co-owner of Project Challenge, Inc. a Miami-based experiential training and development group that custom-designs team training solutions for public and private sector clients. Coca-Mir previously co-founded Accord Productions, a film and video production house specializing in video training solutions and services. As Producer for Accord, he worked with Miami Children’s Hospital, Easter Seals of Dade County, and several of Miami’s top ad agencies. In 1988, Coca-Mir won the Angel Award for non-broadcast production for a fundraising documentary produced for Tinsley Advertising. As Marketing Director for Elexis Corporation in the early 1980s, Coca-Mir produced advertising print and TV ads consumer electronics products and handled media buying and catalog production for sporting goods and apparel lines. For over 25 years, Coca-Mir has developed an extensive client base including Booz-Allen-Hamilton, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, American Express, Parker-Hannifin, Microsoft, MTV, the City of Miami Attorney’s Office, JM Family Enterprises, Burger King, and Miami Dade College. As an adjunct professor for Florida International University’s Center for Leadership, Coca-Mir consults, designs, and delivers cutting-edge experiential leadership training programs. Through the development of customized adventure activities, games, and simulations that address client expectations, Coca-Mir and his team address genuine dialogue, teamwork, decision making, shared values and vision, and authentic relationships. To meet these needs, Project Challenge draws from the fields of integral philosophy, organizational development and psychology, and integrates activities including portable indoor simulations, sailing, challenge adventure courses, kayaking, and drumming/percussion ensembles. Robert DollingerRobert Dollinger

Robert Dollinger, MD is a Founding Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at the Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. Dr. Dollinger provides leadership, mentorship, and counseling for the medical students, and he supervises medical student organizations and fosters innovative medical student learning communities. Working with the Director of Medical Student Counseling and Wellness, he also “coaches” students to help them enhance their interpersonal and communication skills, manage stress, improve academic performance, and cultivate professionalism. Recognized as a leader in the field of college health, Dr. Dollinger is a former president of the Southern College Health Association (SCHA). Dr. Dollinger earned his MD from the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1979 and completed his internship and residency training in general internal medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital and Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach. Prior to arriving at FIU, Dr. Dollinger was the founding President of Westgate Medical Center, a private practice in Broward County, Florida.

Joyce ElamJoyce Elam

Joyce J. Elam is Dean Emerita of the Florida International University (FIU) College of Business. She was Dean from 1998 to 2012, and James L. Knight Eminent Scholar in Management Information Systems for fifteen years prior to her 2016 retirement. Before FIU, she was an associate professor in the McCombs College of Business at the University of Texas and an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. During her FIU tenure, Dr. Elam also headed FIU Online and the Office of Analysis and Information Management. Dr. Elam was a Marvin Bower Fellow at the Harvard Business School during the 1987-88 academic year. She earned both her PhD in operations research (1977) and her BA in mathematics (1970) from the University of Texas. Dr. Elam is an award-winning teacher and recognized expert in the strategic use of information technology and the use of information technology to support both individual and group decision-making. Dr. Elam is also known for her work in helping to develop women leaders. She created, and offers annually, the Women Leaders Program—an executive leadership development program. She also teaches a variety of leadership workshops for FIU’s MBA programs and the Center for Leadership. Dr. Elam is a member of the Board of Trustees of Baptist Health South Florida, Baptist Health Enterprises Board of Directors, and Baptist Outpatient Services Board of Directors, and the Vice-Chair of the Baptist Health Medical Group Board of Directors. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of Bentley University and serves on the board of Our Kids of Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. In addition to numerous teaching awards, she received the 2012 Coral Gables Community Foundation Education Award, AXA Advisors 2008 International Business Woman of the Year from the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, the 2007 Academy of International Business Fellows’ International Dean of the Year, and the 2007 Athena Award from the Coral Gables Community Foundation.

Stav FainshmidtStav Fainshmidt

Stav Fainshmidt, PhD completed his doctoral work at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. He is Assistant Professor of International Business and Strategy at the Florida International University (FIU) College of Business. His research interests include institutions and governance, organizational capabilities, research methods, business policy and strategy, international business, and organizational resilience to crises. Dr. Fainshmidt’s work has appeared in Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of International Management, Strategic Management Journal, British Journal of Management, International Business Review, and Group & Organization Management. Prior to joining FIU, Dr. Fainshmidt worked with Deloitte (Israel) in auditing, consulting, and IPO services. He is a member of the Academy of Management, the Academy of International Business, and the Southern Management Association.

Ron GoldmanRon Goldman

Ron Goldman, EdD is a Senior Consultant at Inspiring Educators and The Ariel Group. A noted psychologist and a management consultant, Dr. Goldman has conducted leadership development programs for organizations such as Achievement First, Match Education, Bridgespan, Acumen Fund, Mercer Management, Putnam Investments, General Electric, American Express, and Hildebrandt International. He helps organizations and individuals better fulfill their potential by developing emotional intelligence and greater understanding of group dynamics. Prior to establishing his own business, Ron held a senior management position at Boston University, where he worked in faculty and staff development, recruiting, marketing, and grant writing. Dr. Goldman has been teaching for more than 30 years, including appointments at Boston University’s College of Communication and Lesley College’s Creative Arts in Education Program. Dr. Goldman’s acting experience includes award-winning public radio plays and dramatic readings, and training with Shakespeare and Company. Recently, he co-wrote (with Marjorie Zohn) a one-person play that he has performed in Boston and New Mexico. Dan GrechDan Grech

Dan Grech is the Vice President of Marketing for OfferCraft, an award-winning gamification software company. Dan is the founder and lead instructor of the MarketHack digital marketing training program at the Idea Center at Miami Dade College, the nation’s largest college. MarketHack has helped more than 150 business owners use digital marketing to grow their companies. Dan is an award-winning print, radio, and digital journalist, having worked as News Director at Miami’s NPR station (WLRN-Miami Herald News) and as a foreign correspondent in Latin America for NPR’s Marketplace and The Miami Herald. He has taught courses in journalism and communications at top universities including Princeton, Columbia and University of Miami. He serves as the vice chair of the Dean’s Advisory Board at FIU’s School of Journalism and Communication and was the founding vice chair of the Friends of the New World Symphony. He has Masters degrees in nonfiction storytelling and in Spanish-language journalism. He is a graduate of Princeton University and was a Fulbright Scholar in Argentina. He is fluent in Spanish, proficient in Portuguese, and is a dual citizen of the U.S. and Spain.

Nathan HillerNathan Hiller

Nathan J. Hiller, PhD is an Associate Professor of Management and International Business at Florida International University. He is also a Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow and Academic Director of the FIU Center for Leadership. He received his PhD from The Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Hiller’s work focuses on two key leadership areas: understanding how CEO characteristics influence strategic decisions and corporate action—and examining the mechanisms that promote effective leadership development. He has published several large-scale reviews and meta-analyses, and investigated characteristics such as executive narcissism, humility, and self-regulation. Dr. Hiller’s research has appeared in the Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of Applied Psychology, and The Leadership Quarterly. A recipient of the Kenneth Clark Award for innovative leadership research, Dr. Hiller has worked on cutting-edge projects related to strategic leadership development, executive coaching, organizational change, and teamwork with Johnson & Johnson, Telefonica, Norwegian Cruise Line, Boston Scientific, Burger King Corporation, HP, Novartis, and the United States Marine Corps.

Angela LairdAngela Laird

Angela Laird, PhD is a cognitive neuroscientist and medical physicist whose research program aims to understand the functional organization of large-scale brain networks. She is the PI of the Neuroinformatics and Brain Connectivity Lab at Florida International University, which focuses on developing novel data analysis algorithms, neuroscience informatics tools, and neuroimaging ontologies to yield analytic strategies for improving investigations into functional brain networks of healthy individuals, as well as in populations with psychiatric and neurologic diseases and disorders. Her research is funded by awards from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Laird received her BS in Physics from Florida State University, and her PhD in Physics/Medical Physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Laird is a former faculty member at the Research Imaging Institute of the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, where she was recognized as a “Rising STAR” by the University of Texas System.

Eli LevyEli Levy

Eli Levy, PhD completed his doctoral studies at the University of Miami and has been in private clinical practice since 1977. A licensed psychologist and marriage and family therapist, Levy holds Diplomates from the American Board of Pain Management and the American Board of Forensic Examiners. He has extensive experience as an expert witness in South Florida criminal, juvenile, and family courts. A veteran of the Israel Defense Forces who served in the 1967 Six-Day War, Dr. Levy is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Florida Psychological Association, the Dade County Psychological Association, and the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. He has taught at Miami-Dade College and St. Thomas University, and lectured in the law programs at the University of Miami and Nova Southeastern University. He held an adjunct assistant professorship at the University of Miami School of Family Medicine. “Change your thought, change your life,” says Dr. Levy. “The way you think of yourself makes up who you are, constructs your character, and develops your behavior. Your emotions are the physiology of your thinking.” Dr. Levy offers consistent, inspiring guidance applicable to leadership and life. He often speaks of “mindfulness” and reminds us how to best approach a difficult situation. “Just look at it, don’t judge. When practicing mindfulness, you can achieve control of your emotions.”

Leonard NashLeonard Nash

Leonard Nash earned his BA in English and MFA in Creative Writing from Florida International University. As a commercial Realtor, Nash negotiated the $3 million sale of 1200 Coral Way in Miami, which will soon debut as The Cuban Museum. Nash is also a widely published author of fiction, creative nonfiction, and business writing. He is credited for his editorial work on prominent novels and nonfiction books, including The Prince of Los Cocuyos, a recent memoir by the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Poet, Richard Blanco. Nash has copyedited numerous glossy magazines including American Businesswoman, Lincoln Road, Las Olas, and Fort Lauderdale Yachtsman. In 2008, Nash received a Florida Book Award Silver Medal for his short story collection, You Can’t Get There from Here. In 2016, Nash joined the FIU College of Business faculty as a research associate and business writing instructor.

Bonnie QuicenoBonnie Quiceno

Bonnie Quiceno believes the transition between yoga postures is as important as the postures themselves. “Like the proverb that underscores the power of the journey, the transition is where we learn to use awareness and focus to arrive at a posture with personal meaning, grace, and power.” A trained dancer, stunt-double, and practitioner of yoga and the healing arts, Bonnie has taught movement for over 30 years. Her teaching and philosophies are colored by her upbringing on an organic farm in Georgia, where she first embraced nature’s power and holistic living. For her yogic training, Bonnie was under the tutelage of Swami Bua, supercentenarian and founder of the Indo-American Yoga-Vedanta society. A licensed massage therapist and certified BodyTalk and Reiki practitioner, Bonnie has also studied BioGeometry and its teachings of the power of electromagnetic fields, the ancient beliefs of the power of earth energies, power spots, and the way color, shape, sound, and numbers affect the human body. Bonnie has held workshops for the executives of Punto Blanco and Gef in Colombia, co-led retreats in Costa Rica, and was Artist-in-Residence with Atma YogaDance at the Barim Institute in Gwangju, South Korea. In 2000, Bonnie created the yoga program at Florida International University. FIU’s “stress reliever” and “in-house yogi” also provides yoga instruction at Bay Oaks Home for the Aged, where she has taught seniors, some of whom have reached the age of 103. Bonnie’s outreach and sharing continue with her newly released book Don’t Panic! How to Use Yoga to Survive the College Experience and her illustrated children’s story, The Good Witch Ella.

Maestro Jon RobertsonMaestro Jon Robertson

Maestro Jon Robertson, DMA is Dean of the Lynn University Conservatory of Music in Boca Raton, Florida. His distinguished career as a pianist, conductor, and academician began early. As a child prodigy, Robertson performed throughout the United States, the Caribbean, and Europe. Already established as a brilliant concert pianist, he was awarded a full scholarship for six consecutive years to the Juilliard School, where he earned his BM, MS, and DMA degrees in piano performance, with additional studies in choral and orchestral conducting. Robertson is former Chair of the Thayer Conservatory of Music at Atlantic Union College, in Massachusetts, and former chair of the Department of Music at UCLA, among other prestigious appointments. Maestro Robertson has guest conducted orchestras nationally and internationally, including the San Francisco Symphony; the American Symphony in New York; the Fairbanks Symphony in Alaska; the Gavel Symphony Orchestra in Gavel, Sweden; the Tronheim Symphony Orchestra in Tronheim, Norway; and China’s Beijing Central Philharmonic—among many others. He is a regular guest conductor of the Cairo Symphony Orchestra in Egypt, and was the principal guest conductor of the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra in Yerevan from 1995 to 1998. Maestro Robertson has also conducted the Bratislava Chamber Orchestra, at the Pianofest Austria at Bad Aussee, Austria; in Cape Town, South Africa; and at the University of Stellenbosch International Festival. Among his many awards and accolades, Maestro Robertson recently received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Loma Linda University in California.

Daniel ShapiroDaniel Shapiro

Daniel L. Shapiro, PhD is founder and director of the Harvard International Negotiation Program, associate professor in psychology at Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital, and affiliate faculty at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School. His pioneering research focuses on addressing the emotional and identity-based dimensions of negotiation and conflict resolution. He is author of Negotiating the Nonnegotiable and coauthor with Roger Fisher of Beyond Reason: Using Emotions as You Negotiate. Dr. Shapiro specializes in practice-based research—building theory and testing it in real-world contexts. He has launched successful conflict resolution initiatives in the Middle East, Europe, and East Asia, and for three years chaired the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Conflict Resolution. Dr. Shapiro has also developed high-impact curricula on conflict resolution, including spearheading an initiative to create the world’s first Global Curriculum on Conflict Management for senior policymakers and business leaders. Through non-profit funding, he wrote a conflict management curriculum that now reaches one million youth across more than twenty countries. Dr. Shapiro teaches a course on negotiation at Harvard College; instructs psychology interns at Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital; and leads executive education sessions at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, the Harvard Kennedy School, and Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital. He also has served on the faculty at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, and at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Shapiro has contributed to a wide variety of popular publications, including The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and O: The Oprah Magazine. He is the recipient of the American Psychological Association’s Early Career Award and the Cloke-Millen Peacemaker of the Year award.

Hock Peng SinHock Peng Sin

Hock-Peng Sin, PhD, an assistant professor of management in the Department of Management and International Business at Florida International University, received his PhD from The Pennsylvania State University. His research areas include leadership, management of dynamic performance, as well as multi-level methodology in organizational research. Dr. Sin has published more than a dozen articles and book chapters in premiere outlets such as Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Leadership Quarterly, Organizational Research Methods, Personnel Psychology, and Strategic Management Journal. His research has garnered over 1,300 scholarly citations according to the Google Scholar index. He regularly reviews for several academic journals and currently serves as editorial board member for the Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Research Methods, and the Journal of Business and Psychology. Among other accolades, Dr. Sin received a 2011 Leadership Quarterly Best Paper Award.

Melvin SmithMelvin Smith

Melvin L. Smith, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Organizational Behavior and Faculty Director of Executive Education at the Case Weatherhead School of Management. He received his PhD in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management from the University of Pittsburgh’s Katz Graduate School of Business. Dr. Smith also holds a BS degree in General Management and Accounting from Purdue University and an MBA in Marketing from Clark-Atlanta University. Dr. Smith’s research and teaching focus on leadership and emotional intelligence in the workplace, as well as social exchange relationships, social networks, and the development and use of human and social capital in organizations through executive coaching. Dr. Smith has provided training and consulting services to dozens of prominent organizations including Alcoa, American Greetings, Bendix, H.J.
