One event brings two awards to the FIU accounting community.

At the recent XXIX Interamerican Accounting Association (IAA) conference held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Florida International University (FIU) received the Fra Luca Bartolomeo Paccioli award.

According to Eduardo Mendez (MS’ 01, BA ’96), president of the Cuban American CPAs Association and Foundation, the prestigious award is named after the 15th-century Italian mathematician, who is dubbed the “father of accounting” and is credited as having invented the modern-day double-entry system.

“I thought being a Hispanic woman meant there’s only a certain level of leadership I can reach,” said Paola A. Lacouture, a student at Florida International University (FIU). “However, after listening to Annette Martinez, I learned that the thickness of the glass ceiling is determined by me. We set our own limits.”

Annette Martinez, vice president of operations, human resources at State Farm Insurance Companies, spoke on “The Bicultural Advantage in the Workplace” on November 3rd.

The School of Accounting in the College of Business at Florida International University in Miami, Florida, is committed to excellence, integrity, teamwork, and lifelong learning.

Our programs are among the most innovative in the country.  On the graduate front, we offer a Master of Accounting and an Executive Master of Science in Taxation.
