Excellence in Civic Engagement Medallion
of Distinction
FIU students who excel in community
service learning and civic engagement while maintaining a high academic
standing will be eligible to receive special recognition at each Commencement
starting this fall. At Commencement, these students will wear the Excellence
in Civic Engagement Medallion of Distinction.
As part of its vision as a top urban
public research University, FIU wants to be known for its "engagement with
local communities." To fulfill its mission, FIU is committed to promoting
public service. In addition, the preamble to the Student Code of Standards
states that the University is dedicated to generating and imparting knowledge
through various means, including community service among students.
The Medallion of Distinction will
recognize those students who represent active citizenship by promoting
civic responsibility and by being involved in community service projects.
Eligibility Requirements
FIU undergraduate non-transfer degree-seeking
students must meet the following requirements to be eligible for recognition:

Earn a GPA of 3.0 or above

Establish a Student Development Transcript
with the Center for Leadership Development & Civic Responsibility

Complete a total of 200 hours of community
service and/or service-learning hours while an FIU Student, documented
by the Student Development Transcript
FIU graduate students must meet the
following criteria:

Earn a GPA of 3.4 or above

Establish a Student Development Transcript
with the Center for Leadership Development & Civic Responsibility

Complete a total of 100 hours or more
of community and/or service-learning hours documented by the Student Development
Transcript.
Undergraduate transfer students are
required to meet the same criteria as those for graduate students except
the GPA, which should be a minimum of 3.0.
Applications
Application forms for the Excellence
in Civic Engagement Medallion of Distinction for Fall Commencement are
now available in the Volunteer Action Center, GC 331 (University Park),
and WUC 257 (Biscayne Bay Campus).
The deadline for submitting applications
is Friday, October 31, 2003. Faculty
and staff should encourage students to submit applications before the deadline.
Applicants who meet all eligibility
criteria, as stated above, will qualify for wearing the Medallion of Distinction
during graduation. Their names will be printed in the Commencement program.
