Career Management Services staff helps alumna capture choice position as federal bank examiner.

Karette Webb-Taylor

Karette Webb-Taylor (BBA ’07) sings the praises of the College of Business Administration’s Career Management Services office. With their assistance, the recent graduate landed a plum position as an assistant national bank examiner with the United States Department of the Treasury’s Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC).

“They helped me develop my résumé and showed me how to highlight relevant coursework,” Webb-Taylor said. “Even though I had limited job experience, I was able to compete for well-paying, high-quality jobs, better than those I found through other channels.”

Of course, Webb-Taylor possesses assets that any employer would prize. Bright and articulate, she exudes a professional confidence characteristic of someone more seasoned. A self-starter, she set up informational interviews in her junior year to prepare herself for her job search. An internship with Merrill Lynch in the summer before her senior year further strengthened her profile as an applicant.

“My parents remind me that they sacrificed a lot for me to be here,” the Jamaican-born Webb-Taylor said. “They’ve urged me to make the most of it and take advantage of opportunities.”

Grace under pressure: Graduate performs well in rigorous interview process.

Webb-Taylor has taken their advice to heart. One of only sixteen candidates chosen from a nationwide OCC search, she endured an exacting application process that involved two interviews, one on campus and a second in Dallas, Texas. There, in a day she describes as “whirlwind,” she was interviewed by a panel of senior OCC officials, took two time-limited exams to test her knowledge of banking issues, and then rushed to the airport for her return flight to Miami.

“I just tried to relax and do my best,” she said. “I drew on my education to get me through the process.”

In particular, she cites the International Banking and Commercial Bank Management classes she took with Marcos Kerbel, adjunct professor, Department of Finance and Real Estate, as arming her with tools and knowledge that distinguished her from other applicants.

Following the completion of a nine-month training program in Atlanta, Georgia, Webb-Taylor will work in the Miami OCC office as an examiner for commercial banks in South Florida. While the newlywed anticipates her return home, she continues to make the most of the opportunities that surround her.

“I am in a great job and Atlanta is a wonderful city,” she said. “I am excited about how much I am learning.”
