Have you checked in with the Bank of America Career Management Services’ offices lately? It could be the first important step on your way to landing the job you’ve been preparing for through your studies in the College of Business Administration.

Count on Career Management Services (CMS) to help build interview skills while offering both undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to connect with recruiters from top-notch companies.

Be prepared—and ace the interview.

The comfortable, spacious new recruiters’ lounge in CBC and ten private interview rooms create the ideal interviewing environment. But before you walk in the door. . . what’s the best way to ensure a successful interview?

“Recruiters collect a lot of facts in a short period of time. They will evaluate your intellectual capacity, technical competencies, past experiences, and how well you relate to other people.”

Barry Shiflett, director, CMS

“It’s important to research the employer and know general information about the company, its products and services, plus its culture and core values,” said Barry Shiflett, director, CMS. “You should be familiar with the position available, with a feel for the skills and qualifications needed for success.”

According to Shiflett, interviewers are looking to determine how well candidates’ qualifications match job requirements and how they might fit in with the company’s environment.

“Recruiters collect a lot of facts in a short period of time,” he said. “They will evaluate your intellectual capacity, technical competencies, past experiences, and how well you relate to other people.”

Check in regularly with CMS for details on interview skills workshops held before career fairs every fall and spring semester.

Message to undergraduates: It’s never too soon to connect with CMS.

The college continues to increase the personal attention and career-search counseling available to undergraduate business majors, thanks to the dedicated efforts of Dawn Lazar (MS ’06), assistant director, undergraduate programs, CMS.

“Most recently, I’ve worked with the Financial Management Association to present a series of workshops on résumé writing, interviewing skills, and career fairs. I’d love to help other student organizations plan similar activities.”

Lazar focuses on building relationships with students and on working closely with student organizations to bring career development opportunities to their members.

“Most recently, I’ve worked with the Financial Management Association to present a series of workshops on résumé writing, interviewing skills, and career fairs,” she said. “I’d love to help other student organizations plan similar activities.”

Lazar reports that CMS soon will have a full-service career services library—complete with computer workstations offering mock interview capabilities.

“Students will have access to interactive computer software plus web cams that pose interview questions, record answers, and then play it all back with a critique of responses and body language,” she said. “It’s very cool.”

To stay informed about job postings, interview opportunities, and other CMS-related activities, Lazar encourages students to register through the college’s Career Link at http://business.fiu.edu/cms/overview.cfm.

Students are welcome to visit Lazar in her office at CBC 127 during walk-in hours on Fridays between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. and again between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m.

“Come prepared for a ten- or fifteen-minute meeting,” she said. “If more time is needed, please contact me to schedule an appointment.”

You can reach Lazar via email at undergradcareers@business.fiu.edu, or call her at 305.348.0025.
