College invests in Career Management Services to meet student needs.

Dawn Lazar

The challenge of getting an internship or job weighs heavily on most students, but Career Management Services (CMS) in the College of Business Administration now offers more resources, support, and timely advice to make the challenge manageable.

New employee focuses on undergraduates.

In June, 2007, Dawn Lazar (MS ’06) joined CMS as assistant director, undergraduate programs, working with fully admitted college juniors and seniors. Though she held a managerial position after earning her master’s degree, she quickly realized that she wanted to work with and help students.

“The majority of my graduate work focused on career development,” said Lazar who had worked at Florida International University for four years as the first advisor in the School of Public Health. “I plan to build relationships with the college’s undergraduate students and to work closely with student organizations to bring career development opportunities to their members.”

CMS Staff: Dawn Lazar, Elsie Florido, Barry Shiflett, and Ellie Browner

Lazar has announced extensive hours for counseling appointments. You can get on her calendar at the following times:

Mondays: 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Tuesdays and Wednesdays: 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.
Thursdays: 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Fridays: 1:00-5:00 p.m.

Though she will take walk-ins, she prefers that students schedule a time to meet with her, since events, such as company information sessions, pull her out of the office

Prior to making your appointment, take these simple steps to ensure a productive meeting.

First, register in CBA Career Link, which you’ll find at http://careers.fiu.edu. Use your Panther ID number for both your user name and password.

Once you have signed in, update your profile and post your résumé. Also, explore the site, where you will find many helpful tools.

“Résumés give us a good starting point for our session,” she said. “Having the document enables me to provide guidance, not only about ways to improve the résumé itself but also about career options suggested by the student’s background.”

To get the quickest response to your questions, send an email to undergradcareers@business.fiu.edu. Until the move to the new building, you will find Lazar in Ryder Building 340B. Her phone number is 305.348.0025.

New building to provide handsome setting for students and recruiters.

Executive Dean Joyce J. Elam has been one of the strongest supporters for expanding career services to enhance students’ chances for landing employment. As one highly visible aspect of that support, when CMS sets up shop in the new building complex in November, students and recruiters alike will experience a huge leap forward in comfort and convenience.

Currently, staff members are located in three separate places, but with the move, the Bank of America Career Management Services offices will be home to all: Barry Shiflett, director; Elsie Florido, associate director; Ellie Browner (MS ’93, BBA ’79), assistant director, employer services, and Lazar.

“I saw the spaces in September and they’re beautiful,” Lazar said. “We’ll have ten spacious interview rooms and a lounge with a kitchen area for recruiters.”

The suite also includes a full-service career library and a small room for workshops.
