College students lend a hand to Hands On Miami.
Members of the FIU Accounting Association (FIU-AA), the Financial Management Association (FMA), and Beta Alpha Psi were among the representatives of student organizations from the College to participate in Hands On Miami Day on December 3, 2005. They joined a legion of volunteers who were dispatched to a total of seventeen sites.
“Our members helped clean José Marti Park, which had been damaged by the hurricanes this season,” said Ana Garcia, president-elect, FIU-AA. “KPMG provided the bus that took us to the site and Fern Munk from KPMG took part in the community service.”
“It was a new experience for me, because most of my community service projects have taken place at schools or shelters,” said Dianne Cordova, president of FMA and one of the seven FMA honors members to get involved. “Hands On Miami Day gave me the opportunity to contribute to a beautification project that turned out great, thanks to the energetic students who accompanied me.”
Their work was part of an effort called “Roots in the City,” a community improvement project that involves landscaping and painting, among other tasks.
Students from the University’s Golden Key, Alpha Epsilon Delta, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), Kappa Delta Pi, and the Honors Council also volunteered for Hands On Miami Day.
