Relay For Life is a great opportunity for you to put your nocturnal stamina to good use. The community event, sponsored by the American Cancer Society (ACS), is a unique overnight celebration of life in honor and in memory of those touched by cancer. Teams gather at public places—schools, fairgrounds, or parks, for example—and take turns walking or running laps all night long.
Relay For Life also raises funds for ACS’s many programs, including research and education. In 2006, the ACS expects to raise more than $17 million.
You can be a part of the effort—along with the College’s American Marketing Association (AMA) Chapter.
“Relay For Life of Blue Lagoon brings together the community of Blue Lagoon, a professional sector of Miami with many University associations,” said Jennifer Weiss, president of AMA. “It is home to corporations such as Burger King, Oracle, and Hewlett Packard.”
Several events for Relay For Life of Blue Lagoon have already taken place, leading up to the Relay itself, which will occur in May, 2006. At an October gathering at the Nocturnal Night Club, AMA raised more than $1000 dollars—just the start of what they are sure they can raise by May. A kick-off party in early December awarded top earners from the 2005 Relay for Life and energized the 2006 participants.
“There was a mini Luminaria Ceremony just like the one that will be held at the Relay,” Weiss said. “We light candles in memory of those who have been lost to cancer and especially to recognize those who are surviving and thriving.”
All University business students and associations are welcome to join in. For more information, send an email to jenweiss@bellsouth.net.
