Students meet with recruiters-and with success-at NSHBMA Conference and Career Expo.

A delegation from the College of Business Administration, particularly the Chapman Graduate School of Business and its Office of Corporate Relations, was a prominent force at the 16th Annual National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHBMA) Conference and Career Expo, held in the fall at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA. The mission of the organization is to foster Hispanic leadership through graduate management education and professional development in order to improve society.
Eleven students, all of whom received all-expense paid scholarships based on criteria set out by Barry Shiflett, director, graduate career management services for the Chapman School, were there to market themselves, to practice interviewing, and to meet with recruiters from Fortune 500 companies.
“I made fifteen contacts in two days, got two job offers, and learned how to network in a room full of strangers,” said Cristiani de Faria, who graduated from the Evening MBA program in December and who has a new job as an internal controller administrator at American Airlines in Miami, thanks in part to her experiences in Anaheim.
“I took the first steps with American Airlines at the conference,” she said. “They had a welcoming cocktail party, which I attended. I met a recruiter who forwarded my information to the hiring person in Miami.”
According to de Faria, who has an undergraduate degree from the University with a psychology major and a minor in business, attending the event was an excellent way to find a job.
“There were a lot of representatives from every company and no long lines,” said Marcelo Carlos Buttice (MBA ’05), who has his undergraduate degree in business administration with a focus in marketing and finance from Universidad de Lomas de Zamora, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. “The process was quick and dynamic, and you got to go to the right person.”
Buttice had an internship at Caterpillar, which he got through the Career Services Management Office in the Chapman School. And he hoped it would turn into a full-time position, but he wasn’t sure.
“I was looking for something secure and talked to as many people as possible who could sponsor someone on a student visa,” he said.
Happily for Buttice, he had the experience of meeting people at the conference and he subsequently got the job offer from Caterpillar that he had hoped for. He now is a marketing consultant for Latin America.
“The Chapman School is first in the United States in the number of Hispanics earning graduate degrees in business,” said Natalia Echeverría, corporate relations manager, whose Office of Corporate Relations for the Chapman Graduate School of Business organized the trip. “We were pleased to have such a large representation from the College because we wanted companies—such as Bank of America, American Express, Target, and Coors—to know about our programs and about the quality of our students and we wanted to entice recruiters to come to our campus.”
