CAREER TIPS AND STUDENT SERVICES

New career counselor likes to build business relationships.

José Toscano (BA '97), a career services counselor dedicated to working with business students in the Landon Undergraduate School, brings a long-standing interest in developing relationships with potential employers to his position as assistant director of Career Services. His own career path shows the value of being open to new possibilities.

"I graduated from Florida International University with a degree in history and minors in education and geography," said Toscano, who was a career consultant and liaison to the Arts and Sciences Department for a year and a half before assuming his current post. "Then, I taught at the Miccosukee Reservation before getting an M.A. at Barry University in computers and technology."

Though he foresaw a teaching career, while he was at Barry, he helped write a grant for the College Reach-Out Program (CROP), funded by the Florida Department of Education. His work for CROP gave him his first taste of building business relationships. And he really enjoyed it.

"Through this academic enrichment program, we brought in people to speak to students about career tracks and to talk to parents about further education and corporate incentives," he said.

He got a second taste of building business relationships when he was freelancing as a marketing consultant.

"The background will help me in this position because I feel responsible to know about the corporations and the areas our students will want to get into," he said.
