Miami Mayor Carlos Alvarez,
CEO President Jason Tilghman.
While Florida International University's chapter of the Collegiate Entrepreneurs'
Organization (CEO) is still in the process of organizing a formal chapter, the group has already been active. Members have
been meeting with local civic leaders in order to learn how prominent people in Miami support entrepreneurship.
In a recent session, club members met with Mayor Carlos Alvarez of Miami-Date.
During the meeting, Alvarez stressed that entrepreneurship is the backbone of our economy. And he had some advice for
young leaders.
"Be knowledgeable—information is power," Alvarez said. "To be an effective leader,
your decisions must be informed ones. You must do your homework before launching a new organization."
Jason Tilghman, president of the CEO, hopes the group can reach out to the community with
educational programs. Alvarez agreed this would be helpful, saying that the group should present forums and workshops on new
enterprise creation.
The CEO, which serves more than 500 colleges and universities, "informs, supports, and
inspires college students to be entrepreneurial and to seek opportunities through enterprise creation," according to its mission.
The University's group is developing promotional activities to publicize its activities and hopes to be an official chapter this
spring.
