Business students broaden their future options by studying abroad.
How can students who want to succeed in international business get the right experience to impress potential employers? Being able to show that they've got a spirit of adventure, flexibility, and the ability to learn in unfamiliar surroundings help set them off from the crowd. A long way from home, Lucy Gutierrez and Alina Isabel Garcia are positioning themselves for success anywhere. And they're having a great time in the process.

How to say "can-do" in a third language

Though she didn’t speak French, had never been away from her family, and had only left the United States to visit Nicaragua, her native country, Lucy Gutierrez eagerly accepted a Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education (FIPSE) scholarship from the College of Business Administration’s Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) to study in the French town of Saint Etienne. She’s one of about thirty international students—from Germany, Spain, Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, Holland, Czech Republic, England, Scotland, and the United States (Tennessee, Arkansas, and FIU’s Sara Santelli)—joining approximately 500 French students at the college.

One course changes course of a business student's life.
In 2002, when Ronald Chinchilla took Service Learning, the sole business school course in the United States that's dedicated entirely to service learning, it changed his life and he describes the professor, Robert "Dr. Bob" Hogner, as his mentor. The very first event in which Ronald participated put him on a path that has led to his earning the Excellence in Civic Engagement Medallion of Distinction in recognition of his more than 200 hours of community service.

"We were serving food as part of the Community Partnership for the Homeless, Inc. CPHI), and a little boy kept thanking us," he said. "It made me feel like I was doing something. I never before saw myself helping others, but this event opened my eyes and heart."

Real Estate Student Association helps open doors to careers.
The newly recognized Real Estate Student Association (RESA) already has ambitious plans, according to the group's vice president, John Paul Fernandez. The main goal of the organization is to provide networking opportunities with local real estate professionals in this exciting field. Monthly gatherings will always include a speaker so that students from various areas—such as marketing, construction, architecture, and finance—can learn more about the many career paths in commercial and residential real estate. RESA also plans to host workshops and conferences.

RESA's members were among the 50 people who attended an awards ceremony in FIU's GC Ballroom to honor industry professionals who support the College's Jerome Bain Real Estate Institute.

Dual Degree program draws enterprising students from Latin America to the Chapman Graduate School.
Students in Latin America can earn two graduate degrees in as many years through the Dual Degree program offered in the Chapman Graduate School: an MBA from their "home" institution and a Master of International Business (MIB) from FIU. They also can remain in the United States for an additional year to work under the Optional Practical Training program. Carlos Ivan Torres found the program a great way to end up with two very different graduate degrees, while it helped Ricardo Santos fulfill several personal and professional objectives.

An Unexpected Welcome

The day after Carlos Ivan Torres arrived in Miami to begin his Master of International Business (MIB), a much less welcome visitor to South Florida put in an appearance: Hurricane Frances . Her arrival closed the University but didn't dampen his excitement. He already had warm feelings toward the people in the MIB program office, and he was looking forward to taking yet another step in his academic career.

There's no place like Rome.
Would you like to take in another culture—and a delicious supply of pasta while you're at it? If this sounds appetizing, consider the upcoming study abroad program in Rome: a city of history, art, and of course, food. Even though they're short, the study abroad offerings organized by the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) provide much more than a tourist experience. You'll also put in class time, getting to study business concepts in a completely new context. And, you'll get to visit a local company, giving you the opportunity to learn firsthand how business operates in another country.

At 26, Ash Huzenlaub was the youngest CEO/chair of a publicly-held company in the U.S. He stills heads that emergency room software company now, two years later, and came to FIU November 12 to share his experience, paying special attention to two soon-to-be finance majors.

Jason Tilghman and Andrew Lanzziano have already set the paperwork in motion to launch a local chapter of the Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization (CEO). The organization, operating at more than 500 colleges and universities around the world, supports and inspires enterprise creation and entrepreneurial spirit. Huzenlaub serves as one of its directors.
