Business students are tops. Case closed. |

After winning the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) Business Case Competition at FIU, there was
only one way for the five members of the FIU Accounting Association to go: up. Up to New Brunswick, New
Jersey, that is, where the national event took place at J&J in mid-April. The team—Thomas Casares, Miguel
Martinez, Ana Perez, Julius Nunez, and Ana Garcia—had successfully evaluated and analyzed an actual J&J
business case. It concerned the development and launch of the first bariatric product (one that deals with
causes, prevention, and treatment of obesity) for Surgical Innovation, a multinational medical device company
based in Austin, Texas.
Despite their success at FIU, their labors were far from over. Between their FIU victory and the national
event three weeks later, the group collectively logged more than 500 hundred hours preparing. But it paid off
as they bested 11 teams from across the country, including those from Rutgers, Lehigh, Lasalle, Villanova, and
the University of Illinois, to walk away with the win.
Who are these hard-working, talented students, what did they learn, where do they see themselves headed,
and might you be a good candidate for next year's competition? Read on for details.

Consultant gets expertise through Alpha Kappa Psi. |
 |
Angelique Smith (BBA '04) knew that she wanted to be a consultant. She also knew she wanted
to be a consultant with Deloitte & Touche. Still, as she entered her senior year, she felt that her hard work
and good grades were not enough to satisfy her "yearning for success."
"I didn't want to finish school without having a 'college experience,'" said Smith, who majored in Management
of Information Systems.
Though there were many options, she decided to pledge Alpha Kappa Psi (AKPsi), the nation's oldest and largest
co-ed business fraternity. The Xi Sigma Chapter at FIU gave her what she was looking for: the opportunity to be
involved in a college organization that also would further her career objectives.
