Last September, Alexander Bolanos was among a select few college undergraduates invited to attend the National Black MBA Association's (NBMBAA) annual convention in Philadelphia, where he facilitated the "Leaders of Tomorrow" program.
The "Leaders of Tomorrow" program, a college-bound workshop that NBMBAA holds every year, is one Bolanos knows well. He was recruited into it himself when he was a high school student. As an outreach program, it helps African-American high school students understand the value of a college education and the process of applying to college.
As a program facilitator, Bolanos shared his experience with young high school students and helped them understand the mantra in which he has come to believe -namely, that "you have to give a lot to get a lot in return."
And it's paying off.
At the Philadelphia conference, Bolanos met recruiters from Fortune 500 companies who were interested in hiring talented students like him. He said he also met potential mentors on whom he can call for advice. And, he said, he even met a few celebrities.
"I met Steadman Graham and Willie Gary, the successful attorney," he said. "Both were great, inspirational personalities; I look up to them and people like them."
He said that Willie Gary's is a great success story.
"Gary grew up the son of canefield workers in central Florida and became a very successful attorney who was able to start a foundation that gives back to the community," Bolanos said.
"That's the kind of goal I aspire to reach," Bolanos said.
A marketing major in the College, Bolanos is vice president of FIU's Honors Council, a student member of the National Black MBA Association, and a member of FIU's BBC Lead Program, a student leadership group based on the Biscayne Bay campus.
With plans to pursue an MBA, Bolanos is well on his way to making a great name for himself.
