HONOR STUDENT LEADS IN AND OUT OF CLASS

When Yvette Hernandez graduates from College with her double degree in Accounting and International Business, she will have gained more than the knowledge contained in the books she read. She also will have gained leadership experience and earned the distinction of graduating with academic honors.

Hernandez is president of Beta Gamma Sigma, the College's honor society. In addition to having high academic standards-Beta Gamma Sigma inductees are in the top 10% of their class-Hernandez represents Beta Gamma Sigma at FIU's Honors Council and in the College's Business Student Council, a council comprised of officers from all of the business student organizations (see related story).

"The students and administrators I work with have helped me refine my soft skills, which I've found to be critical in the business world," she said.

Hernandez has some advice for her fellow students.

"I believe the best way students can optimize their undergraduate experience is by getting involved," she said. "The people you meet, the professionals with whom you network, the tips and advice you receive, and the friends you make all will help you in the future."

"You can learn a lot in the classroom, but you will learn much more outside of it," she said.

More information about Beta Gamma Sigma can be found on the College's web site.
