BUSINESS INSIGHT

.: Professors propose remedies for the manager-employee "feedback gap."

Management and International Business Professors Sherry Moss and Juan Sanchez have teamed up to study and propose ways to narrow what they call "the feedback gap" in manager-employee relationships. Long-time and avid researchers in the area of human resources, they have co-authored a study entitled, "The Feedback Gap: Leveraging Organizational Learning through Meaningful and Effective Dialogue about Employee Performance," scheduled to appear in the first 2004 issue of the Academy of Management Executive.

Sanchez says his research shows that "most managers are not very skilled at giving feedback. In fact, when a manager fails to give constructive criticism, or gives it in the wrong way, in one-third of those situations, they make things worse."

Moss reports that "in one-fourth of cases, when someone performs badly, he or she avoids interaction with his or her manager and the situation becomes unhealthy."

Combined, the statistics in their study suggest that more than half of the time, workplace relationships are unhealthy, owing nearly equally to the behavior of both the manager and the employee. Their paper outlines "concrete managerial guidelines" for addressing the problem and for creating a culture which "views the frank assessment of performance deficiencies as an opportunity to learn and grow, rather than blame and criticize."

IN THE WORKS

.: Kauffman Foundation awards $3 million grant to help fund FIU's Global Entrepreneurship Center.

Thanks to the diligent work and long hours put in by a team headed up by Alan Carsrud, Executive Director of FIU's Global Entrepreneurship Center and Clinical Professor of Entrepreneurship in the College's Management and International Business Department, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation has awarded FIU a $3 million grant through its Kauffman Campuses Initiative. FIU President Modesto Maidique presented the proposal to the Foundation, accompanied by Carsrud, FIU's Vice President of University Advancement Howard R. Lipman, the College's Executive Dean Joyce J. Elam, and College of Engineering Dean Vish Prasad.

FIU was one of eight recipients of the Campuses Initiative grants, which totaled $25 million. Other recipients included Washington University, University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The goal of the Kauffman Campuses Initiative-the first such effort of its kind-is to transform campus life so that entrepreneurship is as integral and natural a part of the college experience as dorms, cramming for exams, and parties.

The Center, which encompasses four institutes and an Entrepreneurial Academy, focuses on family businesses and on the development and growth of new ventures that will make South Florida's companies more competitive in the global marketplace. For more details on the Center, visit http://www.entrepreneurship.fiu.edu.

.: College's partnership with NHCC yields positive results.

Since the announcement in early June of the College's partnership with the National Hispanic Corporate Council (NHCC), several faculty members have been working on projects to enhance the expertise of both organizations on Hispanics in the work place and in marketing to this growing sector of our population.

Marketing Professors Peter Dickson and Anthony Miyazaki, assisted by Cecilia Alvarez, have been building a comprehensive database of empirical academic and industry research examining the U.S. Hispanic market. Once it's completed, it will be available and searchable via the Web. Initially, the database will contain abstracts of academic research, with the industry research to be added later.

In addition, Director of International Alliances and Business Development Miguel Rey, Dickson, Miyazaki, and Alvarez are among those planning the FIU-CBA/NHCC Spring '04 Symposium on "Hispanic Marketing-Planning Today for a Different Future"-slated to take place April 22-24 at Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

.: College adds financial planning certification to its portfolio of professional education programs.

The program represents the latest addition to the OPE's offerings, which run the gamut from accounting and finance to human resources, leadership, marketing, project management and technology. Among the latter are its certificate programs in information security and privacy, which range from those designed for any computer user-no matter what level of experience-to specialty programs focused on technologies and security solutions developed by CISCO Industries.
