Batra publishes first-ever text on "Object-Oriented Systems Analysis and Design."
For several years now, Dinesh Batra, associate professor, Decision Sciences and Information Systems, has taught "Systems Analysis and Design," a required course for nearly all students in computer science and management information systems (MIS) programs. In 2002, when the faculty who teach in the Chapman School's Master of Science in Information Systems program were asked to evaluate it, they cited the need to update the "Systems Analysis and Design" course to appeal more to MIS than to computer science students, as it traditionally had. The group agreed that the new course ought to provide an object-oriented perspective and to incorporate Unified Modeling Language (UML)-which is increasingly popular in the IS field-along with a state-of-the-art CASE tool based on UML.
As a result, Batra and Kuldeep Kumar, professor and Ryder Eminent Scholar in Decision Sciences and Information Systems, completely revamped the course to include this object-oriented focus. However, they discovered that there was no text available to teach the revised course as they had conceptualized it.
With the help of publisher Prentice-Hall and fellow authors Joey George, Joseph Valacich, and Jeffrey Hoffer, Batra undertook the writing of Object-Oriented Systems Analysis and Design, which, he proudly proclaims, "is the first teaching text of its kind." The book hits the shelves in December, 2003.

Alumni Circle members and their selected "mentees" gathered at Modesto A. The program, developed as one of the Circle's major initiatives, will allow senior-level alumni and other executives in South Florida to remain connected with the College and its students by helping them determine their paths to personal and professional success. Alumni Circle members will evaluate the program as it unfolds in order to offer it to a greater number of students and alumni next fall. For information about the Alumni Circle or the mentoring program, please call Monique Catoggio (EMBA '03), director of alumni and partner relations, at 305-348-4227.
