Finance and Real State

The Department of Finance and Real Estate will educate and train prospective managers in the theories and practices associated with the ownership and management of financial and real assets, the financial management of non-financial, financial, and real estate firms, and the creation of investment strategies that include all asset classes.  Instruction will be at the undergraduate and graduate levels and will include doctoral education. The department will produce research that contributes to the body of knowledge in finance and real estate.  Concurrently, the finance and real estate department will support the programmatic needs of the college and the university and the educational needs of the community.

Mission

  • The Department will provide well-trained graduates to the local, national and international business communities by providing excellent undergraduate and graduate courses and programs to students and businesses with links to South Florida.  Specifically the Department will:
    • Offer programs and courses that prepare graduates for the financial, managerial and global economic challenges of the 21st Century.
    • Provide education  on the formulation and implementation of managerial and financial strategies as they relate to the flow of resources and the management of corporations and institutions.
    • Support and reward the continued production of outside funding of research through grants or other means.
    • Support the growth of the MSF (Master of Science in Finance) program and ensure its sustained performance in meeting the needs of the South Florida business community.
    • Support the growth of the MSIRE (Master of Science in International Real Estate) program and ensure its sustained performance in meeting the needs of the South Florida real estate community. 
    • Continue to support doctoral program in Finance.
    • Attract local, national, and international students, and
    • Prepare students for the global integration and restructuring of the financial, managerial, and economic dimensions of business.
  • The Department will build a diverse faculty of excellent teachers and scholars that contributes to basic and applied research.
  • The Department will develop curriculum and instructional materials and integrate information technologies into the teaching and content of all programs.
  • The Department will engage the business community in the continual improvement of existing programs and the development of new educational and research projects.
  • The Department will support existing centers within the college and university and will develop and support centers within the finance and real estate department when appropriate.

Finance Internship

The Department offers unpaid part-time supervised work in a selected bank or other organization in the area of finance.

The goal of the program is to gain work experience in your field of interest and to help you confirm or re-shape your career goals. You will also develop specific work related skills that can enhance your marketability upon graduation. It will help you build your “network” of professional contacts for your future job search upon graduation. Finally it will allow you to demonstrate your talents to a potential future employer. 

These internship opportunities are available at the beginning of each fall, spring and summer semester. 

Requirements/Eligibility

  • Three (3) completed (with a C or above) courses in Finance
  • GPA 3.0 or above
  • If international student, completion of the ISSS workshop prior to start.
  • Need to complete a minimum of 135 hours during the entire semester. Can not withdraw before semester ends, even if hours are completed, unless arranged by sponsoring company and student.
  • 10 page report to be submitted at the end of the semester, and a time log. (See paper guidelines below).
  • Students will need to register and pay course FIN 4941 or FIN 6943 if graduate. This course can be used as your finance or business elective. You will earn a grade based on your 10-page paper and a performance evaluation from the company.
