Professional Activities

Dr. Joyce J. Elam is James L. Knight Professor of Management Information Systems in the College of Business Administration at Florida International University (FIU), Miami, Florida, and Dean of University College, of which FIU Online is part. She previously was an associate professor at the University of Texas and an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvanias Wharton School. Dr. Elam was a Marvin Bower Fellow at the Harvard Business School during the1987-88 academic year. She earned both her PhD in operations research (1977) and her BA in mathematics (1970) from the University of Texas.

Dr. Elam is a recognized expert in the strategic use of information technology, the management of the information services function, and the use of information technology to support both individual and group decision-making and learning. She has published extensively in these areas. She also has assumed a prominent role in the study of women in leadership and is responsible for an annual research study which surveys women-led businesses in Florida. She is also the faculty leader for a women leadership development program called Women on the Move, which is offered twice a year through the FIU Center for Leadership and the College of Business Administration.

Dr. Elam serves on the board of Royal Neighbors of America, a fraternal financial services organization, the board of Baptist Health Outpatient Services, the board of Baptist Health South Florida, and the board of Our Kids.

She was named the AXA Advisors 2008 International Business Woman of the Year by the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and the 2007 Academy of International Business Fellows’ International Dean of the Year. She was also the recipient of the 2007 Athena Award given by the Coral Gables Community Foundation. In 2003, she was selected as the International Business Woman of the Year by Women in International Trade.
