CBANETRoam:
FIU's College of Business Solution for Wireless Technology
General
Information and Initial Procedures
What
Is CBANET Roam?
The
CBANET Roam Network is the College of Business's response to our
students'
expanding need to access information technology in general and the
Internet
in particular, while in campus. CBANET Roam enables students to have
their
personal laptop computers connected to the FIU Internet backbone at
2/11Mbps
through wireless radio links, while inside or in the immediate vicinity
of the CBA Ryder Building in the FIU South Campus. Combined with the
hard-wired
computers in the CBA's labs, CBANET Roam offers valuable support for
students
to retrieve information from the Internet, communicate with peers and
instructors,
and carry out online exercises even in the classroom.
The
Ryder College of Business Building has been equipped with multiple
state-of-the-art
IEEE 802.11b WiFi standard radio transponders, that warrant network
communications
with especially equipped computers, not only inside but also several
feet
around the CBA building. To be able to use the CBANET Roam network, a
laptop
will have to be equipped with a compatible wireless PCMCIA
802.11b
WiFi network card. Recommended cards are Aironet, Cisco, 3Com, Xircom
and
Linksys.
In
its initial configuration, CBANET Roam should comfortably support
several
dozen simultaneous computers employing compatible wireless cards. In
the
near future, CBANET Roam will be integrated to similar wireless
resources
in other buildings in the FIU campuses.

These applications are available on our compfiles page.
Prior
to using your CBANET Roam laptop for FIU emailing or accessing the
Internet
via FIU's modem lines (not wireless access), you must secure an
FIU computer account and a personal FIU username. Check.....
for
instructions.
Modem
Dial-up (PPP FIU) Program
MBA
students can connect to the Internet through the modem. For more
information
on accessing the Internet via the PPP FIU modem dial-up, click here.
You
must specify your own username in the PPP FIU Dial-up Program
to
be able to use FIU's modem access to the Internet. FIU Internet modem
access
is only available if you are an MBA student or if you have been granted
a "PPP" account by your instructor.
Mozilla/Netscape
Browser and Mail Client
The CBA Technology
Center recommends that you avoid using Microsoft's Internet Explorer
and
Outlook programs to browse the web or check email. These programs have
been targeted by numerous virus/hacker attacks and their use increases
chances of system corruption. Instead, it is recommended that you use
the
newer generation of Mozilla products, available on our compfiles page.
Wireless
Network Card Configuration

be able to access the CBANET Roam network, you will need to install the
wireless card. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer and
use the following installation parameters: (Figures shown are
illustrative
of the Aironet card)
