With rising global interest in Latin American ventures, Florida International University's (FIU) 2011 Americas Venture Capital Conference brought together entrepreneurs, investors and service providers in Miami for two days of deal-making, networking and education. Speakers from the top echelons of Latin American entrepreneurship, venture investing, international finance and government addressed the conference, held November 16-17, 2011 at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables and presented by FIU's Eugenio Pino and Family Global Entrepreneurship Center and College of Business Administration.
Longtime State Farm exec describes the workplace's bicultural advantage.
"I thought being a Hispanic woman meant there's only a certain level of leadership I can reach," said Paola A. Lacouture, a student at Florida International University (FIU). "However, after listening to Annette Martinez, I learned that the thickness of the glass ceiling is determined by me. We set our own limits." Annette Martinez, vice president of operations, human resources at State Farm Insurance Companies, spoke on "The Bicultural Advantage in the Workplace" on November 3rd. Her appearance at the College of Business Administration was part of the Herbert A. Wertheim Lecture Series.
The college engages in a number of projects and activities that help us ensure we are sharing our expertise and our resources with members of our community—both in South Florida and beyond.
In addition to our sponsorships of such ventures as World City Business Connexions, a monthly forum for international executives, our South Florida CEO Speakers’ series, and educational activities delivered by our centers of excellence, we actively initiate and coordinate various outreach efforts to involve our students, faculty, and alumni with various constituents throughout the region.
Among the most prominent of these are our Latin American Forum, our Civic Engagement Initiative, which involves a variety of programs, and our Wertheim Lecture Series.
