International Students
Back to: Home

We are committed to helping international students understand the legal and cultural intricacies of working in the United States.  The majority of international students hold an F-1 (student) visa, which allows you to work in the United States for twelve months after graduation through the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program.

International student orientation

In order to participate in international student activities, you are requiredto attend an International Student Orientation; this is required for all international students who are new students at FIU (freshman, transfer students and graduate students).  The following topics are covered: maintaining valid visa status, SEVIS (Student & Exchange Visitor Information System), employment, social security numbers, medical insurance, as well as on-campus and off-campus resources for international students.

For an orientation schedule, see the International Student and Scholar Services’ calendar located on the International Student and Scholar Services web page.

Internships

Internships provide the best way to become educated about your career. Learning by doing and being exposed to professionals in the field provides valuable experience, and a professional reference. Learn about our internship program.

International students holding an F-1 visa are not allowed to obtain an internship unless they have been a full-time student in the U.S. for two semesters.  International students are not allowed to work as interns for an employer during spring or fall semesters unless the internship is for credit and is a required part of their degree curriculum.

If you have questions about Curriculum Practical Training (CPT) and/or Option Practical Training (OPT), you should contact the university's Office of International Student and Scholar Services at 305-348-2421.
