The objective of the PhD in Business Administration is to prepare you for a career in academia by building your understanding of the substantive domains and literature within your selected area of concentration. The PhD program provides you with the methodological and analytical tools required for executing research and creating knowledge. It develops your skills in formulating, conducting, and communicating quality research. In the process, it also fosters your ability to teach effectively.
The PhD program typically requires four years of full-time study: two-and-a-half years of coursework and summer projects, and a year-and-a-half of dissertation research.
You will take a minimum of sixteen courses, with at least six of them in your chosen area of concentration. You also will complete summer research projects under faculty supervision.
Degree Requirements
General degree requirements for all PhD candidates in Business Administration include successful completion of
- all required coursework
- a comprehensive examination at the end of your coursework
- a doctoral dissertation

Admission Requirements
The program admits students every other fall term only. All qualified students are encouraged to apply. Those students selected for the PhD program must demonstrate strong evidence of ability, scholarly interest, and success. They also must have a master's degree from an accredited college or university. Applicants should submit the following to: Florida International University, Chapman Graduate School of Business, Office of Admissions - RB 211-A, 11200 S.W. 8th Street, Miami, Florida 33199-0001.
To be eligible for admission to the PhD program, prospective students must
- meet the general university requirements for admission to a graduate degree program as described in our general requirements
- ensure official GMAT (minimum score is 570, average score is 600) or GRE (combined verbal and quantitative scores is a minimum of 1120) scores meet minimum requirements. The FIU code for both exams is 5206
- submit a current resume of professional experience and detailed curriculum vitae
- submit a statement of purpose—a one page essay describing your professional goals and reasons for pursuing a PhD degree at Florida International University, not to exceed five typed, double-spaced pages
- submit three letters of recommendation
- submit a letter requesting a graduate assistantship if applying for a stipend. Stipends of $17,000/annum requiring a mixture of research and teaching are available. These stipends also may include a tuition waiver, depending upon the applicant's qualifications
Please remember to select the program code "BADM10PHD" from the pull-down menu listing all FIU graduate programs in the online admission form. Selecting an erroneous program code may jeopardize timely admission.
Tuition
Tuition and fees usually change each academic year. Tuition and fees are set by the State of Florida at the beginning of the fall semester for the coming academic year. The following was the tuition per credit hour for the 2005-2006 academic year:
- Florida Resident Graduate, Thesis or Dissertation $227.10
- Non-Florida Resident Graduate, Thesis or Dissertation $867.55
In addition, you are required to pay the various student fees required by the university (athletic, health and parking) which total approximately $136 per semester.
If you are studying on a student visa, you also must purchase a health insurance policy. The current cost for this is $1,021 per year.
