All PhD students are required to complete a series of core content courses and statistics/research methods courses. In addition, they will be required to conduct a first year Summer Research Project which should be of publishable quality. The elective courses will be selected by the student with the advice and consent of student’s Faculty Advisor.

Students are expected to maintain a GPA of 3.3 or better throughout the program.  The Qualifying Examination will be administered after the their first year’s Spring semester, will involve three components:  (1) the students should have a 3.5 cumulative GPA, (2) the student should receive a positive evaluation recommending continuance in the program by a vote of all Graduate Faculty in the department -each member of the Graduate Faculty will vote to recommend either student continuance or dismissal; the result of the individual vote will then be discussed by the entire committee, who will make a final decision regarding student continuance.  Students who do not fulfill the 3.5 GPA requirements may still petition to be considered for continuance in the program.  Students who are recommended for program continuance will then proceed to step (3) of the Qualifying Examination, which involves completion of the first year research project under the direction of the student’s advisor.  Students who do not receive a “pass” grade on the Summer research project will be deemed unqualified and therefore will not continue in the program in the Fall semester.

Students will be required to teach one or more courses, including summer courses.

At the end of the Tier I coursework (second summer), students must pass a comprehensive examination, which will be administered according o the criteria specified in the section of this Manual entitled “Comprehensive Doctoral Examination.” Upon completion of this comprehensive examination, students will be admitted to PhD candidacy.

Students must satisfy all university and college dissertation requirements, including that of residency.
