Advancing entrepreneurship

We believe an entrepreneurial approach can help any individual or organization achieve greater economic empowerment and success.

We work to increase awareness of entrepreneurial principles within the university, the business and civic communities of South Florida, and beyond.

To this end, we seek to:

  • influence course development throughout the university
  • nurture new technology firms
  • strengthen family businesses
  • conduct or encourage research on important issues
  • encourage entrepreneurial community enterprises, and
  • develop entrepreneurial leaders.

In 2003, the Kauffman Foundation selected Florida International University as a Kauffman Campus to support this work.

Our entrepreneurship basics

Our program is built on:

  • applied research focused on specific concerns of entrepreneurial enterprises
  • education on principles and issues of entrepreneurship through academic courses and informal activities
  • outreach helping entrepreneurial firms and not-for-profit organizations in South Florida and the Americas
  • an interdisciplinary emphasis that promotes collaboration within the university and in external partnerships, and
  • an international focus that builds on the university's international reputation and Miami's position at the business and financial crossroads of the Americas.

A multi-faceted organization for diverse challenges

We have four institutes (Institute for Family Business, Institute for Technology Innovation, Entrepreneurship Research Institute, and Institute for Community Innovation) and an Entrepreneurial Academy. Each has a unique and complementary charter that collectively address the unique entrepreneurial needs of one of the nation’s largest ethnically diverse academic institutions, located in one of America’s most entrepreneurial and dynamic, international cities, Miami.
