Master of Science in Human Resources Management

Back to: Home

The Chapman Graduate School of Business and the FIU College of Continuing and Professional Studies offer a Master of Science in Human Resources Management (MSHRM) program in Jamaica.

Modeled after the MSHRM degree program at the Chapman Graduate School, the MSHRM program in Jamaica is conducted at University College of the Caribbean (UCC) facilities in Kingston, located at 17 Worthington Avenue, Kingston 5, Jamaica.

The first MSHRM program in Jamaica began in September 2004.

Designed for Jamaican professionals, the fourteen-month MSHRM-Jamaica program consists of a single cohort. Both FIU's and UCC' graduate faculty teach the program's 12 courses.

UCC provides appropriate classroom facilities for the program while FIU, through the Chapman Graduate School and the College of Continuing and Professional Studies, provides the faculty. Course evaluations are conducted to monitor the quality of the program.

Highlights

The Master of Science in Human Resources Management—Jamaica (MSHRM) is designed to provide a solid understanding of the field of human resource management. It is grounded in the recognition that the human resource function is a key component of an organization's business strategy. It covers the most advanced, cutting-edge knowledge and practice of human resource management available in the United States and Jamaica.

While the program includes traditional human resource (HR) topics-like recruitment, staffing, and human resource development—it is unique in its strong focus on international human resource management, on the uses of information technology, and on change management. Its comprehensive curriculum also encompasses the content of and prepares participants for the most valued professional certification exams.

A majority of the students in our program are working HR professionals and, as a result, they are interested primarily in practical applications of the material. Our courses and instructors recognize student's interest in procedural ("how to") rather than declarative ("defined") knowledge. That's why experiential exercises, case studies, and other engaging and active forms of applied learning are a critical part of our program.

Student Spotlight

"With varied professorial styles, our professors provided the opportunity for learning through their lectures, by inviting local experts to lecture, by encouraging students to share their experiences and knowledge and by facilitating role-plays and group presentations. I continue to be amazed by how much I have learned in such a short time. I made many wonderful acquaintances and some friends. I am sure that, as we join the first cohort as graduates and as alumni, we will uphold the proud traditions of Florida International University and serve our country-Jamaica-which we love, well."
